The annual Braiding Diversity event is coming up on March 31st - spread the word to your students! The online event aims to connect marginalized young women in the Waterloo region with members of the legal sector. This year’s Braiding Diversity event will include a motivational keynote from Jordana Goldlist, founder, JHG Criminal Law. Jordana Goldlist overcame struggles with addiction and homelessness as a teenager, and went on to graduate from law school and start her own criminal law practice. She discusses her unique story in this TEDx Talk called Who Judges The Judge? (https://www.ted.com/t/jordana_goldlist_who_judges_the_judge) For further information and registration, visit: https://ojen.ca/en/program/braiding-diversity-into-justice

Registration is now open for OBA-OJEN Competitive Mock Trial tournaments throughout Ontario. The case this year, R v Smalls, is about assault causing bodily harm. As with last year, there are two formats for using the mock trial materials; the competitive format and the alternate format. Students have the option of using the materials to prepare for competition with other teams in their region. Otherwise, they can choose to participate in the alternative format, which involves using the materials to prepare Opening and/or Closing arguments and submitting them for review by a lawyer. Register your secondary school students today to participate: https://ojen.ca/en/oocmt

Dear friends of OJEN, at the end of another challenging year, it’s nice to have good news to share. OJEN is having a birthday! In 2022 we celebrate 20 years of building legal capability in young people. For the last two decades we’ve worked hard to form connections between people who work in the education, legal and community sectors, knowing that these partnerships help us develop relevant and responsive public legal education initiatives for young people. We’re thankful for this support, but in 2022, we’re asking our friends to support OJEN with a donation as well.
