A report issued by StatsCan late last month looking into COVID-19 mortality rates in "ethno-cultural neighbourhoods" found communities in B.C. that were home to more than 25 per cent visible minorities had an age-adjusted COVID-19 mortality rate that was 10 times higher than neighbourhoods that were less than one per cent visible minority. In Ontario and Quebec, neighbourhoods with large visible minority populations had age-adjusted mortality rates three times higher than the... general public. That COVID-19 deaths in B.C.'s ethno-cultural neighbourhoods are ten times higher than comparable rates for Canada's broader population could be partially linked to a lower general death rate in the province. As of Monday, 299 people with the virus had died in B.C., out of more than 11,000 deaths across Canada. #COVIDLife

Is the office as we know it over? Well, turns out the pandemic is not the first time people considered this question. We need only look back to the oil crisis of 1973 when, due to complex international politics, gas was in really short supply in North America the gas required to get people back and forth to work.... This got people thinking that instead of moving employees from home to the office, maybe the office could come to the home. At the same time, companies like IBM realized there were other benefits to remote work. Namely, talent could be hired anywhere without encroaching on valuable office space.

Cadillac Fairview had been offering in-person Santa visit reservations as recently as Thursday. It had planned to limit visits with Santa to nine people at a time for a maximum of five minutes and roll out a mandatory mask policy and sanitizations between guests. Cadillac Fairview will instead offer Santa storytime sessions in French and English on Facebook for families and will allow people to book one-on-one video chats with the jolly man from the North Pole. The switch, wh...ich will not result in any job losses, came after extensive conversations with government officials and consumers, said Flannagan. "Similar to what we've seen with other important events like weddings and birthday parties, we believe this temporary shift to online is the responsible thing to do in a very different year," he said. #COVIDLife

The test pulls a constant breath of air containing tiny salt particles through the mask material. The salt particles are similar in size to particles able to contain the coronavirus that might originate from droplets expelled by an infected person's breath, cough or sneeze. During the test, samples of air inside and outside the mask are compared to see how effective the mask is at reducing the level of particles. Previous tests on consumer masks have commonly looked at how ma...sks can help block particles when coughing or sneezing and prevent transmission to others. But the Marketplace test shows that certain materials make some masks better at limiting wearers' exposure by filtering what they breathe in, Scott said. "Even fairly low-efficiency masks are actually quite effective at catching much larger particles. But, it takes a really good mask to catch the small ones as well. And we know that the virus will travel not only on the big ones but the small ones as well," said Scott. #COVIDLife

Its authors looked at five academic reports researching the way previous "health disasters" like pandemics affected children's state of mind in comparison to "natural disasters" like earthquakes and tsunamis. One 2009 study found 30 per cent of children who were isolated or quarantined as a result of H1N1, SARS or the avian flu developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Meanwhile, only 5-11 per cent of children who were affected by an earthquake, wildfire, f...lood or hurricane later showed symptoms of PTSD, according to several reports published between 2010 and 2018. Some studies also found children whose parents developed PTSD were likely to follow suit. Side by side, the studies suggest children are more likely to develop PTSD after a pandemic than a natural disaster. #COVIDLife
