Soy gets a bad rap, so let’s clarify a few of the most common myths. Soy can increase your risk of cancer There have been numerous studies, including large independent meta-analysis studies, that suggest soy can be protective against breast and prostate cancer. In fact it seems that women who consume soy after being diagnosed with breast cancer have greater survivability and a reduced risk of recurrence. Those women who have been eating soy regularly starting at a yo...ung age, seem to have the most benefit when compared to women who start eating soy later in life, but there is still benefit! Soy will give me man boobs Let’s just say that as a male, you’d have to be consuming an excess of soy every day, for a prolonged period of time to see any negative health affects. We are talking over 6-7 cups of tofu a day! Stick with the recommended 2-3 (max 3-5) servings of soy foods per day and you’ll be more than fine. What’s a serving of soy? 1 cup of soy milk, 1/2 cup of tofu, tempeh, soybeans or edamame. Soy is bad for my thyroid Studies have shown that those with normal thyroid function and adequate iodine intake, do not need to worry about soy foods impacting their thyroid function negatively. Those with already diagnosed hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) should be mindful that soy can interfere with thyroid med absorption, but this does not mean you need to avoid soy all together! Soy is bad for the environment The United States, Brazil and Argentina account for 80% of the worlds soy production and yes, farming of soy has contributed to mass deforestation due to increased demand. Here’s the thing, over 78% of the soy produced is consumed not by humans, but by livestock ... In Canada it’s thought that over 60% of soy produced is GMO (made to withstand heavy pesticide use), but non GMO and organic soy is readily available. As with all food, less processed soy foods like natto, tempeh, miso, tofu and edamame, should be included more often than their more processed counterparts including soy meat alternatives for example. If you’ve never cooked (or even baked) with lentils before, you may be intimidated by them. But let me tell you - they are one of my favourite pantry staples. ... Not only are they jam packed with quality nutrition, they’re extremely affordable, easy to use and have a long shelf life, up to 1 year if stored correctly! There are different types of lentils but my favourite are split lentils because of their quick cooking time (~15-20 minutes). ? Lentils belong to the legume family aka plant-based protein superstars. Per 1/2 cup cooked lentils you get 12 grams of protein, a good dose of fiber, potassium, folate and iron! ? I love adding lentils to spaghetti sauces, chili’s, soups and stews, curries, dal and so many more.
