A little #TBT of the lift bridge from a different angle. This photograph was taken looking toward the west on Wellington St.
Effective January 14, 2021, the museum will continue to be closed to all and access to the collection and resources will be closed. Email us at [email protected] for inquiries.
2020 has definitely brought challenges to the museum and our community. What it didn't stop was the generosity of so many who donated hundreds artifacts and documents to our collection/archives. Thank you everyone for helping preserve our histories and lets make 2021 and even better year!
Kawartha Lakes has a rich history of local bands. From the Sylvester Band to the Lindsay Kinsmen Band to the Little Britain Boys' Band, we were never short on musical performances at gatherings. Below is a photograph of The Lindsay Band on a picnic at Sturgeon Point in 1867. (2012.15).
Attention #genealogists! You now can access Township Papers from the 1780s-1870s for free on FamilySearch's website. Long gone are the days where local hotelkeepers worried about being raided by the License Commissioners of Ontario for evolving liquor laws of the time. The Royal Hotel at the corner of Kent and Lindsay Streets owned by Thomas McConnell was among those who felt threatened by local temperance forces.
Did you know that the museum hosts a fun FB creative group called OGM Creative Club? We have been hosting several knit alongside and the next one starts tomorrow! If you love knitting and want to join us, come join the group (just search the name), grab your needles and some yarn. Cast on is 10am but you can join in any time.
This Remembrance Day, take a moment to watch our #HeritageMinute on John McCrae, the First World War soldier who penned the poem ‘In Flanders Field’ in 1915. The poem helped popularize the red poppy as a symbol of Remembrance.
The John Carew Lumber Company Office on William and Francis Streets, Lindsay. First photo: John Carew stands with his daughters, and his son Francis. Second: John Carew is seated with two of his daughters and son Charles in front of the enlarged two-storey JCL office.... #kawarthalakes #history #local #lindsaydowntown #museum #jail #business #lindsay
The Toronto Construction Company in 1911 were in charge of building roughly eighty miles of railway for C.P.R. between Peterborough and Port McNichol. In 1911, the first year of construction was in Lindsay in which T. Allen Best (who took the photos) was the time-keeper; making sure everything went smoothly. Remnants of the bridge still exist today, known to many as "the pillars".
Masks can be safe and beautiful. Mine features art by Chipewyan Dene Artist John Rombough. The Bear - On an early spring morning, the bear in his elements is walking along side grandfather rocks. As the Ancestors watch over the land, the ravens welcome the bear from a long winters nap. Available, along with other prints, at @olde_gaol_museum #covid19 #mask #johnromboughartist
Our latest donation has to do with the old Visking/Union Carbide/Viskase Ltd. factory located in Lindsay. Donation includes over 180 photographs, packaging, administrative and corporate documents as well as catalogues ranging from 1949-2007. The Museum is always looking for donations, if you are considering a donation, for email [email protected]
Whether you like the snow or not, after the first official "snowstorm" yesterday let's all be thankful that the streets don't look like this.
Exhibit Opening Today! This appreciation gift was presented to J. D. Flavelle in 1917 and was designed by J. E. H. MacDonald prior to forming the Group of Seven. Everything from their business, personal, sport, and civic life is on display starting today! #museum #history #kawarthalakes #exhibition #lindsay #downtownlindsay
One of our latest donations over the past few weeks. This telegram and letter were sent to Premier Leslie Frost from the 10th Prime Minister of Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie King in May 1950 upon the opening of Mackenize House in Toronto, just two months before the passing of William L. M. King. The letters were once in possession of John Carew, grandson of John Carew, of The John Carew Lumber Company in Lindsay.
Sometimes it’s worth taking a minute to look at the fall colour crawling up our beautiful museum. #fallvibes #kawarthalakes #museum #history #fall
Happy Women’s History Month! This photo, taken in 1898 shows the local Victoria County Woman’s Christian Temperance Union chapter. Before women had the right to vote, the W.C.T.U exerted large amounts of political and social capital in the fight against the sale of liquor. This local chapter can be credited for heavily influencing the rural areas of Victoria County outside of Lindsay in the multiple plebiscites and referenda against the sale of alcohol in early twentieth century Ontario. #womenshistorymonth
