Shout out to the volunteers who helped to clean up our neighbourhood.
Please come out and help clean up our neighbourhood! Every bit helps.
Many thanks for helping dig out our intake once again! You are the best crew
Oldfield Creek Hatchery is proud to be a learning partner with School District #52 and set up fish tanks across the district. Multiple classrooms take advantage of the ‘Stream to Sea’ Program to learn more about salmon, a keystone species of our local ecosystem.
A study published in The Canadian Journal of Zoology, finds that at least 3% of juvenile salmon are eaten by Great Blue Herons prior to sea entry. 3%, and that is just one single bird species. https://www.cowichanvalleycitizen.com//blue-herons-identi/
Spilling 4 litres of oil can contaminate as much as one million gallons of water. Spilling a pint of oil in a wetland or lake could cover the surface area of an acre of water. Aquatic species, especially those who provide food to developing Salmonid fry (nymphs and larvae of insects such as stonefly, mayfly, caddisfly, and black fly) are highly susceptible to pollution because of their external gills. It’s very important that oil is properly disposed of. Anyone with information regarding this spill or any other potential damage to aquatic environments should report to the 24 hr DFO Observe, Record, and Report hotline: 1-800-465-4336. It’s also a good idea to keep that number in your cellphone because you never know when your going to need it.
