Taking Space Film Release Party + Concert Taking Space, a short documentary about the do-it-yourself skate park movement in the context of increasing youth abandonment, will be screened Friday, June 14 in Leslieville. Created by a video-journalist/activist and lifelong Beach resident Nicky Young, the 14-minute film will be shown at the Gerrard Grand Theatre, 1035 Gerrard St. E., between Pape and Jones avenues. The event, which will also include a concert, will begin at 6 p.m.... Taking Space will be screened alongside Underground + F***ing Loud, a short film by Onyeka Oduh about the DIY music scene. I spoke to one of the Project Managers at Beaz today. They have received complaints about skaters jumping the fence and thrashing in the construction site. He a...lso told me that when they pour the new concrete, it will take 28 days to properly cure and dry. Dont be the person that ruins it for the rest of us for an Instagram post. On April 1st 2017 The Skate Loft received notice that our landlord would be taking back our space to further develop their movie studio business which has alrea...dy taken over 70% of the building. We have essentially been gentrified for the booming Toronto film industry and the Skate Loft as we know it will be turned into a green screen stage. Since Being notified we have actively canvassed the neighborhood and worked with a commercial real estate agent to identify new space for our home. As of today Im happy to announce that we are finalizing the details for a lease on a 6500 square-foot warehouse which will effectively double our skateable space. The current Skate Loft is 3800 ft.2 with only 3000 ft.2 of skateable space. Work at the new park has already begun. The new space has legitimate frontage on a major street, a welcome and open reception and lounge area, parking spaces, 65 feet of 6 foot high windows, brand-new bright LED lighting throughout, two brand-new washrooms, ground-level loading dock and is steps to a 24 hour bus route and only minutes from the subway. Simply put, calling this Skate Loft 2.0 is an understatement. This new space will allow us to accommodate 40% growth in our drop in visits and skateboard programming capacity. Loft 2.0 is new, clean, quiet, fresh and unlike our old space in anyway. All this being said, Work has already begun and the cost of the new space will more than triple our current operating cost and will not be possible without sponsorship support of the skateboard industry, crowdfunding, and hard work of volunteers. Thursday May 18th will be the last night of skate loft at 6 Curity. Come out to show support and help us raise some funds and get sentimental for all the great times we had at the park.
