February is #blackhistorymonth and if you would like to take the opportunity to read about a local legend and Vancouver’s first lifeguard, Joe Fortes, then you can find his story along with the story of other Black pioneers in B.C. shared in a new digital museum by BC Black History Awareness Society (www.bcblackhistory.ca under Community Stories). In our own collection we are very privileged to have Joe’s certificate and lamp on display.

Did you know we have artefacts from the S.S. Beaver throughout the Museum? The Beaver was the first steam vessel to operate along the Pacific Northwest of North America. It was in service from 1835 to 1888 when it ran aground at Prospect Point. It remained perched on the rocks until 1892 when it fully sunk.
