Today we had a life changing fire call. We were dispatched to a large grass fire off of FM 949 and Pleasant Trails Road. While attacking the fire line a firefig...hter collapsed with a possible heart attack. It happened in the presences of Columbus, Bernardo and Garwood Firefighters and our on scene EMS crew. The firefighter lost his pulse and the crew sprang into action. They started CPR with CVFD’s AED and oxygen bottle and mask off of our command unit 1470. The AED did it’s job along with the crew. He was loaded in PHI Med 7 air medical helicopter and made the hospital in stable condition. You never know who you might help, even when it’s one of your own. EMS has been coming to all large fire calls for several years now. It paid off in an extreme way. The firefighters family has been notified and should be at the hospital at this time. We started carrying the AED for our safety along with basic medical gear. The Columbus Fire Dept now has three AED’s in various units. First responders that started CPR FF Duane Naiser, Medic Steven Silver, OEM Chuck Rodgers, Medic James Chollett, Medic Jerald Krenek, FF Jody Mismer, FF Bradley Berger, FF Jody Ripper and FF Scott Krpec. All units on scene was Columbus, Bernardo, Cat Spring, Garwood, Eagle Lake, Sheridan, Rock Island, and Sealy Fire Dept. Colorado Co EMS M1, M2, Sq1, Utl1, Med Command 800, and PHI Med 7. Colorado Co OEM, Commisioner Pct 3, & Constable Pct 3.

It is heavy heart that I write this message today. On the evening of February 4th our Fire Department was called out to a motor vehicle accident on secondary 5...99. The roads were extremely icy, and travel was hazardous. However, as our firemen always go above and beyond the call of duty, they went out despite the conditions. One of our trucks lost control on the ice and rolled. As a result, our Fire Chief, Patrick Kelly was injured, we pray for his speedy recovery. Tragically Fire Fighter Stephen Rayfield did not survive the horrific event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rayfield family. This has been a traumatic event for all our fire fighters and their families. So please support them in any ways you can in the coming days. Signed Mayor Richard Elhard Deputy Mayor Trudy Kilner Councillors: Brenda Wismer, Kevin McDgouall, Don Sisson, Shawn Peach, Cecil Yates.
