Corpus Christi Sunday The Body of Christ. Amen. Last week we celebrated the unity of God in three persons on Trinity Sunday. Today we have another feast centred on the mystery and power of unity.... Today we focus on the Eucharist. In this time of Covid 19 there is the often expressed longing of people to return to communion. They will tell you that they watch mass on tv or the computer all the time, but what they miss is receiving communion. St. Thomas Aquinas, said that first grace of Eucharist is unity. This is not a singular unity. The first unity is what it does to us a believing people. In our sharing in communion we become one body in Christ. We live today what Paul taught the early church, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. In the communion rite at mass which begins right after the Eucharistic prayer, the community prays together the Our Father, the prayer Jesus taught us to pray. Then we offer a sign of peace to those around us, for eucharistic communion becomes rather anemic if we do not hold a deep sense of unity with God’s people. Then we acknowledge God’s abounding grace that heals us and then we come forward to receive communion. People can miss the point that coming forward to receive communion is ideally a procession of God’s faithful people. We return to our seats, pray privately and together and are then sent out into the world to be the Body of Christ. The other aspect of unity is equally important. When the minister say to you, The Body of Christ, our amen is our assent, our yes to the proclamation. When we receive Christ we receive the fullness of God. We receive the Father and the Spirit as well as the Son. This sacramental encounter with Christ is also an encounter with the one who creates the universe and the one who sustains us and calls us forward. That could sit perfectly as an interesting idea, if we as Christians were strictly in the business of ideas. We are in the business of relationships and one relationship surmounts all others, that is our relationship with God. Eucharist is that core reality brought to human experience. When we are sent out into the world as the Body of Christ, we are also sent out as the advocates of creation and the worthy receivers of spiritual power. We do not proclaim ourselves to be the body of Christ as part of some club or a select group, rather we leave the church as the Body of Christ, with the deep and uncompromising willingness to create a better world. Our transformative power reaches into our homes, workplaces, neighbourhoods and parishes. The Body of Christ. Amen FF
