Filing your income taxes late can be a very costly error. The Canada Revenue Agency charges a late file penalty of 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month for each month between the filing deadline and the date the return was filed to a maximum of 12 months. That means, if you are more than a year late filing your tax return, and you have a balance owing, you will face a 17% late file penalty. The penalty increases if you are late in back-to-back years to 10% of the balance owing plus 2% per month to a maximum of 20 months.
