BIG NEWS! But first, a little background: #BuddyCheckforJesse was created in memory of Jesse Short-Gershman. In an effort to help Coaches destigmatize menta...l health challenges, the "green tape" initiative created, by Stu Gershman, is currently in its second year and is supported by BC Hockey. Buddy Check for Jesse has already helped 1000's of hockey players learn acceptance and understanding by providing material and information to coaches to help them educate their team on the importance of supporting one another through mental health challenges. The goal is simple: help create an environment where teammates support one another and are more aware of the mental health challenges rampant in our youth today. This year we will be able to fund 1100 teams and provide green tape, wristbands and print material for the coaches and players to continue to raise awareness for mental health challenges and mental illness. OUR BIG NEWS: We have received the ability to receive donations through the BC Amateur Sport Fund, administered through Sport BC. PLEASE consider donating. A donation of $30 funds one team, $60 funds two teams, $90 funds three teams...and so on. Please help us raise awareness and support mental health in sport and consider donating to our trust fund in support of #BuddyCheckforJesse. KMHA is hosting with Barb Egan at the Okanagan College Tuesday August 27th 6:00-8:00pm - Train like the Pros 2. We hosted this event with KMHA in January at it ...sold out, so it is back by popular demand! It is a charity event with NHL speakers , Rocket coaches to kick off the Memorial Cup season, philanthropist Tom Budd, and Mayor Colin Basran. I will be interviewing them on the importance of mental health and mental training to feel and perform your best in hockey and in life. It is an amazing chance to hear the stories through Q and A with Josh Gorges, Wade Redden, Kris Mallette (Rockets coach), & Quintin Laing (head of minor hockey) on reaching their dreams, sustaining their incredible careers, and the importance of mental health and mental training in sport performance, and in life. Philanthropist Tom Budd and Mayor Colin Basran will also be sharing some words. Please invite anyone you think would be interested. They do not need to be a hockey player, or even athlete, but someone who appreciates stories of struggle, perseverance, and inspiration in reaching your dreams. As well, as giving back to the community for a great cause! ALL proceeds go right back into the hockey community here in Kelowna. It goes towards creating a Mental Health and Mental Training Fund through our Third Space Community Care Fund specifically for Kelowna Minor Hockey athletes, coaches, and teams for team workshops and individual sessions for mental health and sports psychology related issues to end stigma and help leave a lasting impact long after the season is over.

Received a nice piece of feedback from our final game in Revelstoke. Hello from Revelstoke, I wanted to congratulate your team on their conduct at the end of g...ame 6 - the final Chiefs game. In the middle of the skirmish at the very end of the game, I saw #14 Gallant hug one of our Revelstoke players in what I felt was a great display of sportsmanship. The handshake lineup was special to watch (I’m aware that some of the players are familiar with each other from playing together in the past), as it showed the great respect both teams had for each other. Here were the players just moments earlier battling in a hard game, now slowly shaking hands, talking and hugging, again in such a display of respect - from both sides. What really stood out for my husband and I though, was that the team stayed on the ice and congratulated our team when the banner was presented. A few players had started to head to the dressing room, but quickly came back when they saw the majority of their teammates waiting on the blue line for the presentation. Again, a classy display of sportsmanship for which your team should be proud. Conduct like that is taught from the top down, which means that everyone involved in your organization should be congratulated. I have an 8 year old novice player (who was sadly away for last nights game) and many of his teammates were at the game. I can hope that they will learn to accept defeat with as much sportsmanship as your team did last night. Many people cringe when I tell them my son loves hockey, but to see players like yours deal so well with adversity, I can only hope my son grows up to act in the same way. I thank you for showing the many young kids at the game what sport is really about. Congratulations to your players on their season, and best wishes to them wherever hockey and life takes them. Their conduct on the ice will serve them well as they go forward on whatever path they choose. A grateful hockey fan from Revelstoke, Tanya Traverse

Today is #BellLetsTalk day. A cause that hits home for many people in our sport unfortunately, including myself. Please take today to spread awareness, and re...minder that everyday should be Let's Talk day. No matter how tough we all are, we are human and days can be hard. I look busy allot, but I hope everyone knows that I am always looking for a break, and there is nothing I would want to take a break more for than learning more about the people I care about. I have the respect for you where you can always feel safe and comfortable with any topic. Don't tell yourself that you are troubling anybody with anything, because you are not; if anything you are giving me that opportunity to know you better. Door is always open, safe and judgement free. Trends shift when something we care about more than ourselves is threatened. Maybe our phones being threatened will have us making better decisions when it come...s to raising children in today’s society. . . Obviously this is bunk news and slightly satirical but it proves a point. We are raising kids that are having to rehab from their childhoods physically, mentally and emotionally. . . It’s so much deeper and bigger than youth sports injuries. . . There isn’t a single finger that is gong to stop this leak in the damn of our dysfunctional society when it’s overflowing from the top. . . . Follow @kellybroganmd and read and listen and learn. FROM A HOCKEY PARENT: One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money and spend so much time running around for your son to play hockey ?" Well I have a c...onfession to make: I don't pay for my son's hockey. Or his skates, pads, helmet, and uniform. Or his ice time, clinics and camps. So, if I am not paying for hockey, what am I paying for? - I pay for those moments when my son becomes so tired he feels like quitting but doesn't. - I pay for the opportunity that my son can have and will have to make life-long friendships. - I pay for the chance that he may have amazing instructors that will teach him that hockey is not just about a game but about life. - I pay for my child to learn to be disciplined. - I pay for my son to learn to take care of his body. - I pay for my son to learn to work with others and to be a proud, supportive, kind and respectful team member. - I pay for my child to learn to deal with disappointment, when he doesn't get that score he hoped for, or fell during a breakaway he has practiced a thousand times, but still gets up and is determined to do his BEST next time... - I pay for my son to learn to make and accomplish goals. - I pay for my son to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight. - I pay so that my son can be in the rink instead of in front of a screen... I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for hockey; I pay for the opportunities that hockey provides my child to develop attributes that will serve him well throughout his life and give him the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen for many, many years, I think it is a great investment! S.Martin

At the Humboldt Broncos game tonight the Declaration of Principles was unveiled by members of the hockey communities. DECLARATION OF PRINCIPLES We believe every leader of the sport has the responsibility to inspire stakeholders in an effort to deliver a positive family hockey experience. Hockey participation offers families value beyond making an individual a better player or even a better athlete. The game of hockey is a powerful platform for participants to build character,... foster positive values and develop important life skills. These benefits are available to all players, desirable to every family and transcend the game. Today, guided by our common values, we jointly pledge to the following Principles. We Believe: 1. Hockey should be an enjoyable family experience; all stakeholders organizations, players, parents, siblings, coaches, referees, volunteers and rink operators play a role in this effort. 2. Hockey’s greatest value is the role it plays in the development of character and life skills. 3. All hockey organizations regardless of size or level of competition bring value to players and families in their ability to deliver a positive family experience. 4. Physical activity is important for a healthy body, mind and spirit. 5. There are significant benefits of youth participation in multiple sports. 6. Hockey programs should be age-appropriate for all players, accounting for each individual’s physical, emotional and cognitive development. 7. There is great value in all forms of hockey, both on and off the ice. 8. All hockey programs should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Simply put, hockey is for everyone. We believe in our ability to improve lives and strengthen communities globally through hockey. We believe that living by these Principles will provide a healthy, balanced and enjoyable experience for all and inspire impactful service beyond the rink.
