The Model. 1:200 Scale at 5 feet in length. Built from local ash using both analogue and digital methods. A carved ash base cncd to illustrate the topography both above and below sea level. The thickness of the cantilevered plexiglass plane represents both the high and low water marks. The structural frame, highly textured skin and the intensified landscape are entirely hand-crafted. Our work is the product of beautiful collaboration and genuine resolve.... Our core team employed the skills of craftspeople spanning the maritime provinces, from North Preston, Nova Scotia to Charlottetown, PEI. From New Minas to the North End of Halifax. As we head further east, we are thrust out beyond the boardwalk and shoreline into a floating world of walkways and islands, where we feel a sense of buoyancy as we are offered unobstructed views to the southeast of Georges Island tantalizingly close off the coast and the layered offshore landscapes of the harbour as it opens to the sea. When we were imagining this gallery it was crucial to have spaces that wouldnt just accommodate for Mikmaq gatherings, but they would be created from the ground up to BE Mikmaq gathering spaces. At this moment were calling it the oculus a significant outdoor space created as the connection between the great gathering place on the water, and the landscape of the laneway and the site reserved for a future building. The circular gathering place serves multiple purposes. ...It provides an outdoor learning space for young and old related to the Education Studios. It provides a place under the oculus for ceremony and in winter, the skeleton of wood can be sheathed for indoor/outdoor events. This is a site that embraces process, change, flux, and time, promoting a culture of creative interaction and engagement within the public realm. This project is a celebration of the dynamic qualities of art, urbanism and ecology and the synergies between the city, the gallery and the shoreline. The eastern extension of the gallery, the tail of the eel, is a place of respite and contemplation. We were given the challenge by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia to create a space rooted in this place, to honour and acknowledge the original caretakers of this land. No other art space exists that began from Mikmaw ways of knowing; a space that breaks away from a square box. The exhibition spaces are bathed in natural light from above and will have no corners or sharp edges, a request put forward by elders on our council as a means to avoid energy from getting trapped and n...ot flowing as it should. We know the importance of listening to our elders, hearing their guidance and implementing these requests, and we will continue to do so moving forward. - @jordanbennettart Each of the artists have provided their work with permission and with an honorarium. The massing recedes from the shore line. The building massing lowers toward the water, allowing for the suns path to engulf the boardwalk year round. The form mitigates high intensity winds. This image is a street view of the Salter/ Lower Water street entrance based on the Mikmaq peaked hat worn by the matriarchs of our community. The hat acts as a symbol of the strength, wisdom, love and power that the matriarchs hold within the Mikmaq communities. Where the Wild Things Are. . . The Where the Wild Things Are window installation will occupy the iconic storefront at 50 Water Street at @informinteriors. The showcase is inspired by our 2018 Louis I. Kahn Yale Visiting Assistant Professor studio Where the Wild Things Are, makes after Maurice Sendaks 1963 childrens book.
