So you’ve had Botox or dermal filler. Great! You decide to check out the changes, and as you look in the mirror, there it is: BRUISING. But why does this happen?... Very simply, it’s the nature of the needle. Any time you have a needle inserted into your skin (think blood being drawn, IV, etc.), you have a chance of bruising. This happens because small blood vessels are damaged as the needle is inserted. When dealing with the face, it’s even more likely to bruise, as there are so many veins and arteries in the area, especially the lips, which are highly vascular. The areas of your face that show the most visible signs of aging, like the eyes and upper lip, are the most likely to bruise after filler injections. Though bruising is highly likely (studies show it happens in 19%-24% of patients), there are things you can do PRIOR to your appointment to prevent it from happening: 1. AVOID certain supplements: Ginger, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, Green Tea, Vitamin E, Fish Oils, St. John’s Wort, and Flaxseed Oils. 2. AVOID certain medications: Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Naproxen (Alene). 3. AVOID alcohol, as it temporarily increases blood flow in your body. 4. ADD certain supplements: Arnica Montana (a few days prior to appointment). 5. ADD certain foods: Leafy green vegetables, fresh pineapples (high in vitamin K). Some things to do AFTER your appointment to prevent bruising: 1. AVOID the gym or strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours. 2. ADD Arnica Montana. Now you’ve done all you can to avoid bruising, but if it still occurs, some ways to manage bruising include: 1. APPLY a cooled tea bag on bruising 2. SOAK a cloth with white vinegar and apply to bruise 3. ICE the bruised area and elevate if possible What you need to keep in mind is that bruising is very normal.
