Living dinosaur? The lake sturgeon is a prehistoric-looking species that has been living in Ontario’s large lakes and rivers since before Canada was Canada! Lak...e sturgeon evolved millions of years ago and is also one of the longest-lived fish living 50-60 years on average with some living up to 150 years! Although the lake sturgeon is an adaptable species that has survived many environmental changes over time, they are at risk as a result of overharvesting and habitat alteration. As a long-lived species, lake sturgeon take decades to mature and reproduce and it will take many years for populations to recover. DYK? Lake sturgeon don’t have scales. Their body is covered in bony plates which provides a protective armour. To learn more about our research and monitoring on this species, visit our science publications catalogue at www.ontario.ca//catalogue-natural-resource-scientific-and- and search for sturgeon. #MNRFScience #WildlifeWednesday #Fish #Ichthyology #LakeScience #Nature
