We cannot thank PwC Canada enough for being our exclusive Gold Sponsor for our 15th Spelling Bee Challenge. They've made our marquee fundraiser possible for four years running! Through the years, they've helped us expand to new schools across the Lower Mainland, add new books and literacy games to our program and now, transform to meet the changing needs of students struggling with reading. PwC Canada is not only an industry leader - providing quality assurance, tax, consulting and other professional services - but a community leader. Their support of organizations like ours provides stability in these uncertain times. We are grateful for their continued involvement with ONE TO ONE.

Reading is everywhere! Like we shared before, "It doesnt matter if its a graphic novel or if its about sports, there is value in any topic that your child is interested in." This even includes reading instructions for a fun activity like origami. https://bit.ly/3j6PGnH... Presented by ABC Life Literacy Canada & Canadian Childrens Literacy Foundation #ReadonCanada

Did you know about the power of reading with pictures for your child? #readingtip Here is what the Edutopia writer shares, "at an early age, my passionate engagement with this literary art form greatly strengthened my reading and writing skills and, by extension, my success in the classroom." We agree! Our volunteers often use books with pictures to spark joy and interest in reading. It also makes for great conversation, as the student tries to predict what the text will say ...based on the images. https://www.edutopia.org//reading-with-pictures-learning-c
Differentiating between their, there, and theyre can be difficult. Thank you, ABC Life Literacy Canada, for this helpful visual.
One way to help keep your childs reading skills sharp is by having them read a story they know: the story of their summer. Keep a summer scrapbook chronicling their adventures, and then have them create the captions for each entry. (Its okay to help them write it if they need support). Then they can practice reading by reading their captions out loud. Its a fun way to boost their reading confidence and to remember what is sure to be a fun summer. ... Enjoy your summer! . . . #SummerStories #BuddingAuthors #ReadingTip
In the spring, we launched a Facebook Reading Campaign to offer strategies and support for parents and caregivers reading at home with children. We'd love to learn more about your thoughts on the resources we shared on this page. Here is the survey link: https://bit.ly/32p3YtV Itll only take two minutes of your time.

Use noisy punctuation to help your child make sense of what theyre reading. Look for the signals and choose a sound/action for each punctuation mark! Comma: slow down Exclamation point: sound excited... Questions mark: ask a question with your voice Period: stop Noticing and using punctuation is essential for fluent reading.

ONE TO ONE touches the lives of almost 3000 children who reflect the rich diversity of British Columbia. Because we play a significant role in the lives of our students, community members, and volunteers we need to be clear: Representation matters. Relationships matter. Black lives matter. Indigenous lives matter. https://one-to-one.ca/2020/06/diversity-inclusion-statement/
Encourage your child to share what theyve learned or re-tell a story after reading! We often talk about making predictions before reading, but it can be just as useful to reflect on those predictions afterwards. #ReadingTip after youve finished, get your child to think on their prediction and compare it to the story as written! They can then share it with a friend or family member.... Thanks to the Harvard Graduate School of Education for the tip. Dont miss out: theyre providing free access to parental reading resources on their website!

Help your child make the connection between letters, sounds, and words. Try: pointing out a letter. What letter is that? Fish? That's right, "F" Ask: what sound does it make: "FFF!" Connect: that's F. It makes a FFF sound, and it's at the start of the word FISH! ... #ProTip: make it fun by practicing how the sounds are made: put your lower lip under your teeth and blow - FFFFF!

Audio books can help your child be a better reader! If you are taking a road trip this summer, make sure to bring along an audio book. Your child gets to "read" a book that might be outside their own reading level #Tip: If they have a hard copy to follow along with, it can help them develop their word recognition skills!... Plus, who doesn't love the opportunity to share a good story with their family! https://www.scholastic.com//why-audiobooks-are-great-kids. Scholastic Canada
Take a book walk with your child when youre reading a new book. Together, you can anticipate what it might be about. 1) Look at the cover, title and author for clues 2) Use this information and ask: what do you think this book will be about? 3) Once youve imagined what the book is about, you can ask: what do you already know about (that topic)?... Now its time to read it together and see how close you were! #HappyReading.
We know that books have the unique power to transport readers to other worlds and send them on an adventure to meet new characters some who are like them and some who are not. It's on this journey of reading that we grow. Only 26% of childrens books published in 2017 contained multi-cultural content. We recognize the lack of diverse content and its importance to learn about new places and people, and to develop compassion and understanding for each other's experiences. We...re continually inspired by that experience and we invite you to go on a journey with us. Thanks to our friends at Vancouver Public Library, we now have access to a list of children's books to "help destigmatize difference, celebrate diversity, and empower youth with stories of resistance and resilience." And, we hope for more. Read one tonight.
Here is a Friday #readingtip from teacher, author, and literacy consultant, AND friend of ONE TO ONE, Lori Jamison, Read every text more than once. Try choral reading (aka unison reading) with your child. They can work on skills like fluency as they practice reading aloud! #ProTip: it's best to keep the passage relatively short when reading together.
Until we can hit the dance floor again, at least we can find movement in books ;) Which is your go-to book-dance move? #Bookworm

#ReadingTip You read with a lot of expression! Well done. When reading with your child, help them understand what they've done well. Make sure to highlight the specific reading behaviour in your praise. Rather than "Hey, that's great." Try, "I noticed that you skipped the word and read on. Way to go... We call it Praise vs Praise

We look forward to continuing to acknowledge new volunteers every year!
