A Laurier Brantford student’s determination to educate the public about human trafficking has led to becoming a finalist in a global competition hosted by Oxford University. The Map the System competition requires teams to research the systemic reasons behind social and environmental problems and present their findings in the form of a visual systems map. OBV reached out to this thrithteen-year-old girl after introduced by the local Women's Union. This little tan-skinned sweetheart surprised us by how gentle and endearing she was, and by the calmness in the way she carried herself. She was abused but refused to feel defeated. Her brightness made us realized of even more compassion in our heart. We were trying to convince her and family to come for a tour at OBV house to help with the decision whether she would move in with us.... The little girl was hesitant at first as she worried no one would look after of her mom and the younger siblings. She was planning to just go on with life in her hometown, where she would just get a manicurist job, manage some money to help with mom's everyday hustle. Not until she actually visited OBV house and were encouraged by her family, the Women's Union and our ladies at OBV, she made up her mind to start a new chapter of life there and call it home, where she would be with new sisters. She is someone who was raised in struggles with poverty. She is also someone innocent and kind-hearted. Our mission is to nurture that soul, now that we had been able to bring her to the opening arms of other sisters from OBV home. Dear girl, the future will not only be alright but also be in the light. You will be living, studying, growing with people who cherish you. You are now safe and sound. School closures during this pandemic have many pros and cons - however, there is a new worry. Out-of-school children are particularly vulnerable to traffickers, especially those who are tech-savvy. About 222 million schoolchildren - one in eight pupils - are affected by school closures, according to UNESCO, the U.N.’s cultural agency. The figure hit 1.6 billion in April last year. Millions of women, children and men worldwide are out of work, out of school and without social support in the continuing COVID-19 crisis, leaving them at greater risk of human trafficking, Ghada Waly, UNODC Executive Director, said in news release announcing the findings from the agency’s report on human trafficking. The pandemic has given rise to vulnerability - making it very easy for people to become victims. Read more here: https://news.un.org/en/story/2021/02/1083542

Have you ever heard of the spike in trafficking surrounding events like the Super Bowl? Thankfully, it's a bit of a myth. Each year, it is said that the Super Bowl brings in massive amounts of sports fans to the host city, inviting an influx of sex workers, which results in a spike in trafficking.... However - the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver saw that the sex work market actually shrunk during the event, mostly due to an increased police presence and extra traffic. THE SHINE CENTRE HAS LAUNCHED! We are proud partners of @auscamfreedomproject and The Shine Centre, which is a one-of-a-kind leadership centre in Phnom Penh that will build a strong resistance to trafficking and break the internal and external barriers to freedom that adolescent girls face. This week, they invited the girls, their families, local partners and school directors to come witness where some remarkable things are going to happen. ... Together, we are raising female leaders who otherwise might be exploited and we're looking for more committed partners in 2021. Want to join? DM us or @auscamfreedomproject.
