I co-lead an indie studio with my husband of 24 years. We developed a narrative game engine and work with authors to help them adapt short stories and novels as interactive storytelling. I've been playing games since 1985 - as a kid, I was obsessed with Tetris. Since then I've gravitated towards point and click mysteries and the Tex Murphy adventures are among my faves. ? No. I came into it by joining forces with my husband. I enjoyed the biz dev side of the company we started and later discovered that my comedic and writing skills would be well put to use in game writing. ? If she can see it, she can be it. I'm a firm believer we should do our best to be trailblazers for as long as it is healthy for us to do so. , ? That we change the language around inclusion to make it clear we're looking to expand the offerings versus take space from someone else (which is how it is perceived). Adding more food to the buffet just makes it more delicious. ? Connect with other women who are willing to champion you. Find mentors. ? Women like Brenda Laurel and Megan Gaiser - pioneers in wanting to create engaging spaces for girls to play games back in the 90s and 2000s. ' ? It's an opportunity for us to highlight the accomplishments of incredible women that are often overlooked. ? As a white Canadian, I have more advantages than most. Despite growing up in poverty, I was able to attend university with student loans and find lucrative job opportunities afterwards. I also have the privilege of healthcare. ? As a woman-led company, we are challenged by the fact that women raise significantly less money than men. Women get 3% of venture capital funding if that. We often put ourselves into a place of "must achieve perfection" before we show things and often miss opportunities. ' ? The way Barack Obama champions his wife and daughters is lovely. But more so, he has been a tireless advocate for raising awareness of complex social and racial issues. ? Melinda Gates, Oprah, Geena Davis, Malala. ? The journey is a winding road. The skills you pick up along the way will all come in handy some day. You will arrive at your destination. , .
