Community gardens to open soon!
"The province of Ontario has re-opened community gardens and declared them an 'essential source of fresh food' for people, including those who are facing food insecurity, during the COVID-19 pandemic." https://www.cbc.ca//ontario-community-gardens-essential-1.
Good story on Victory Gardens. Vegetable seed sales are up 60% over last year. Why don't you try your hand with growing some vegetables this year? One Tomato started on the premise of Victory Gardens in 2009. Plant a tomato plant, or any vegetable, this year. Grow whatever you like to eat, eat as much of it as you can, and donate the rest to a local food bank. It's as simple as that! Be really excited that you grew, and ate, one tomato from a plant that you've nurtured.
Staff and volunteers at our local food bank and soup kitchen (The Inn of the Good Shepherd- Sarnia) have been working incredibly hard this week and last due to the pandemic. They cannot close their doors on those who rely on them. They’ve modified their food bank food and soup kitchen meal distribution. Today a staff person was helping a mom and her young son, and yes it wasn’t social distancing, but the young boy hugged the employee's legs to say thanks for the food.... That’s why they do what they do. To brighten and help someone’s day. To provide respect and dignity. No one should go home and have no food. They are in serious trouble due to recent cancellations of events like Cyclone Aid food drive, Empty Bowls fundraiser, and the Annual CANstruction, to name a few. So if you can assist, every amount helps. Let's give The Inn everything they need and more! You can donate right now - it takes less than TWO MINUTES by visiting https://www.theinnsarnia.ca/donate/ Donate in honour of "One Tomato" - let's see how much money we can get there! This problem won't be resolved over the next week or month, but together we can make a huge impact on the lives of thousands of people. Thank you for reading and believing in the power of community!
To Our Fun With Food Participants: As a preventative measure, due to the current health concerns, One Tomato Environmental Education will be cancelling our Fun With Food Cooking Program for seniors. The One Tomato board will review this cancellation at the end of the month and follow the advice from Lambton Public Health, Provincial and Federal Governments. The Easter Feast that we were planning for April 02 is also being cancelled, but we will be rescheduling that feast to... a later date. Again, we continue to monitor this situation closely and will provide ongoing updates as needed. We also encourage our participants to stay up-to-date through Canada’s Public Health website at: https://www.canada.ca//d/coronavirus-disease-covid-19.html Thank you , and we look forward to welcoming you all back soon
