New Teacher Feature Meet Miss Kiyah Leier-Marshall @kiyahlm Kiyah has been a movement specialist her entire life--whether it be through yoga or dance, she flows with grace and strength. Come and watch the magic happen + make some yourself through her guidance this Wednesday Dec 30 at 8-10am PST on our Digital Studio. ... Her fave quote: "You are exactly where you are suppose to be.... Never worry about where you're going. Trust yourself and trust that no matter what you're doing, it's where you're supposed to be. Do what you do, and do it well and everything else will fall into place" Her fave sutra: "Santosha (Contentment) - it’s really helped me with my practice. I’ve been really working on keeping present with my practice and I like to set santosha as my intention when I practice!" What's keeping her going through these times: "my family, my close friends, the community, my practice and getting outside!"

. Teacher Feature: Sjanie McInnis: . 1. What can students expect from your classes I like to frame yoga in the context of current events and broad social, political, and economic contexts, so I talk about that stuff. To me, yoga isn't a porcelain figure you take off of the shelf on special occasions, it's your every real day and your all real day. Then I move people, usually in the vinyasa style because that's how I got started, and I give you some alignment guidelines here... and there if I can. I don't practice with you because I don't want my limitations to be your limitations. I hope you will just listen to my voice and do what you can. Or you can just do something else haha. . 2. Currently what is your favourite yoga pose/or practice and why? My favourite poses are long hold inversions, shoulderstand and headstand. My favourite practice is aparigraha, "greedlessness", that I am attempting to implement by way of helping people see that capitalism has reached the limits of its helpfulness [if it had any] . 3. Currently what is your favourite song on your yoga playlist? It's not even on one of my playlists but I play it when I can; I'm very moved by Burial's "Forgive". People seem to like Andrew Bird's "Ethiobirds". I have a whole playlist called Birdsongs which is all about birds and songs about birds, if anybody wants me to share that. . 4. One fun or any fact about you Or if you would like to add or say anything else. I'm very into birds. We currently have three chickadee houses put up all over our place, and a couple of feeders. I'm enjoying making focaccia bread every few days for the family. The first one had kalamata olives and today's has cherry tomatoes. I stole rosemary from our neighbour's. When I was in Grade 10 I made a De La Soul sweatshirt using fabric paint from Lewiscraft in Ontario and now my kid wears it. . Teacher Feature: Peter Elmas . 1. What can students expect from your classes? I believe in a practice led by breath and the innate wisdom of the body. I take students through sequences and into asanas with precision while encouraging them to turn inwards and observe the profound effects of the practice in the moment. I also encourage students to make their practice intimately personal and suited to where they are Now. Students can expect to move within breath, land in deep s...paces and develop the tools needed to heal and find freedom. I hope to connect students to a sense of powerful peace and peaceful power within. . 2. Currently what is your favourite yoga pose/or practice and why? Since breaking my neck last year I have been approaching my headstand practice all over again and I am loving the need for and benefits of heightened awareness within it. . 3. Currently what is your favourite song on your yoga playlist? I can't seem to make a playlist these days without including @eastforest's remix of @trevorhallmusic's 'A Reminder' . 4. One fun fact about you? I have been a fan of professional wrestling for as long as I can remember. . Catch class with Peter Tuesdays 12:00-1:00pm, Thursdays 4:15-5:15pm and Fridays 10:00-11:30am. https://www.oneyogaforthepeople.ca/schedule

Feature Teacher: Madeleine Brown . For Madeleine, the practice of yoga is rooted in nothing less than discovering what it means to be fully human. By uniting body, mind and spirit with our breath, we invite a deeper connection to our selves and our innate potential. Trained in Vinyasa yoga she is passionate about honouring the roots of this practice. She draws inspiration from her many teachers who continue to light the way. .... 1. What can students expect from your classes? Grounded in accessible yet dynamic flowing sequences, expect a strong focus on foundational poses and alignment with a backdrop of soulful tunes. Creative sequencing helps to make space within the body, while subtle interwoven themes bring the class together to create a moving meditation. . 2. Currently what is your favorite yoga pose/practice and why? Half moon! As an ardent lover of anything moon-related I definitely thought this pose would come easier to me when I began to practice yoga. As a standing balance hip-opener it challenges on both mental and physical levels. The progress Ive made in Ardha Chandrasana has been slow yet steady over the years and the pose has become a new favourite of mine. I love it because it helps me to remind myself how far we can push our edges with consistent, dedicated practice. . 3. Currently what is your favorite song on your yoga playlist? Right now Im loving the song Breath by EMBRZ because it has a way of kicking in at the exact right moment in each class that I teach! I also love Baba Hanuman by Krishna Das because it takes me right back to my teacher training, and the chanting creates the most beautiful backdrop to a slow, mindful practice. . 4. One fun fact about you? Im a total foodie - the one thing I love more than yoga is creating an amazing meal. In my spare time I teach cooking workshops and you will often find me at the local farmers markets searching for the freshest greens or wild local mushrooms! . Join Madeleine every Sunday for the month of March as she leads our by donation community class 7:30-8:30pm https://www.oneyogaforthepeople.ca/schedule See more

The real power of the Buddha was that he had so much love. He saw people trapped in their notions of small separate self, feeling guilty or proud of that self, and he offered revolutionary teachings that sounded like a lions roar, like a great rising tide, helping people to wake up and break free from the prison of ignorance - Thich Nhat Hanh . Teacher Feature: Lisa Parans . 1. What can students expect from your classes? As a seasoned Ashtanga yogi and graduate of the Lila School of Vinyasa Yoga, Lisa chooses to teach an easily accessible Vinyasa Flow class that is both playful and mindful, by sequencing you to dance with your breath from one posture to the next. She encourages you to come as you are, burst out into laughter or song, enjoy the playlist while finding movement and leave knowing that you are ENOUGH! ... . 2. Currently what is your favourite yoga pose/or practice and why? I have always enjoyed Ustrasana, camel pose because it can relieve stress and anxiety and offers the mental benefit of processing emotions. Many dislike this chest opener pose as it physically places ones heart in a vulnerable position. Often people are trapped in their thoughts, always thinking and thinking with their monkey mind. I used to get embarrassed because people called me sensitive then I realized I just choose to think with my heart. This pose allows me to showcase how much love I have to offer! So next time you are asked to get into this pose, maybe try a new perspective, dont worry about dropping your head back but simply offer your loving heart and smile to that yogi across the room from you! . 3. Currently what is your favourite song on your yoga playlist? How could I ever choose just one? It will change according to my mood or the mood of the class sequence and theme. It is a safe bet there will always be a Bonobo track included! . 4. One fun fact about you! I was in a dance troupe that performed at the Calgary 88s Basketball Team Halftime Shows. Whoops age disclosure haha! . Catch class with Lisa every Sunday 7:30-8:30pm for the month of February as she leads our first month of by donation community classes. https://www.oneyogaforthepeople.ca/schedule

One Yoga for the People Vancouver 17.02.2020

Teacher Feature: Kendra Anderson . 1. What can students expect from your classes? A heartfelt and devotional practice with inspiration drawn from daily life, poetry or music. That, balanced with the integrity of alignment and accessible asana with lots of options, modifications and the use of props all with the intention to create more space in the body. ... . 2. Currently what is your favourite yoga pose/or practice and why? The samasthiti or tadasana right after a powerful flow sequence. Taking that time to soften, connect and simply BE in the full embodiment of Self. . 3. Currently what is your favourite song on your yoga playlist? Ooh Child - MILCK best song to let go, melt into and maybe have a little cry in savasana . 4. One fun fact about you? My son (who is almost two) and I love to interpretive dance with scarves to the song above! Another great way to release. ; ) . . Teacher Feature: Sasha Bahador @sashabahador .... 1. What can students expect from your classes? My classes are an invitation to wholeness & deep inner listening. Students can expect to restore their nervous system, embody the sacred shapes of Yoga in a fluid & meditative way, to feel connection to the sacred, intimacy with self, devotion to breath. I also have a love for being equally reverent & irreverent, serious and hilarious. . 2. Currently what is your favourite yoga pose/or practice and why? Well it changes based on my personal weather system. Right now Im crushing on long hold in Halasana/ Plow pose. In general Seated Meditation is always my personal peak pose so whether my body needs to dance wildly and shake loose, or spend 10 minutes in a forward fold or go upside down to get to a clear state for meditation, thats what I go by. . 3. Currently what is your favourite song on your yoga playlist? I personally tend towards the use of non-lyrical music in my classes and also have a deep love for silence. My favourite song on my current playlist however is Immunity by Jon Hopkins. . 4. One fun fact about you? My animal totem is the wolf & wandering the woods my happiest place. . Want to experience class with Sasha? Join her every Friday 12:00-1:00pm and Sunday 4:15-5:30pm https://www.oneyogaforthepeople.ca/schedule
