#throwbackthursday Personal Training is: 10% information 90% imagination... This video is an excellent reminder that adaptability is an essential component of the fitness profession. Our client roster is vast @onlythestronginc. We have young, old, beginner, advanced and many other subcategories This client is a congenital amputee (born without) from the elbow downwards. Part of his training goal was to develop strength and size symmetrically. Part of his challenges have been the ability to create great levels of flexion or minimal levels of extension at the elbow joint. This will obviously greatly impact his force production The exercise in this video was created to help produce a level of effective activation in the latissimus. In any traditional rowing maneuver the subject uses their hand and wraps the weight in their fingers while bending at the elbow and drawing the load towards the body. In this scenario there is no hand or forearm so we will need to find an anchor closer to the frame of the body in order to create the action In the video I anchor a simple band to the distal portion of his arm and ask him to pull away from me. This encourages lattisimus activation through multiple fibers. He generally favours internal rotation as he pulls towards his frame (and that is necessary for maximal lat activation). The only other cue I give him as you see is to lower his shoulder throughout the movement (shrugging). This happens as a by product of the general weakness in the left side. The body works towards a component of tension to help facilitate the movement. Although we do know in a shoulder shrugged position it is near impossible to have maximally lattisimus activation. By reminding him to lower his shoulder, I am giving a better chance for the right muscles to receive stimulus. For those wondering how I balance load side to side? It comes down to feel. Studying how the client reacts to load on fully developed side will allow you to understand the type of resistance necessary bilaterally Hope you all find this interesting! #onlythestronginc

Today’s workout *Not Pictured*... 10 - 50 metre sprints at 100% 10 - 50 metre recovery sprints at 30% Accessory work *Pictured* 5 - Conditioning incline back pedals I love to use this exercise with clients to him create stimulation in the posterior chain post workout So much of our training takes place using our anterior chain and involves heavily recruiting quadriceps and hip flexors. By implementing back pedalling on an incline we encourage the use of the hamstring group as the functional agonist. This not only will help you develop stronger hamstrings but the balanced training will be critical for injury prevention You will love it! Try it out and tag me #onlythestronginc
