This 20 year old Quarterhorse gelding was presented for a growing sore on the upper left eyelid. This was later confirmed to be a squamous cell carcinoma after biopsy. Due to location we used light surface debridement, cisplatin bead implantation and careful use of the laser to treat the area. Thanks to a diligent owner who took pictures everyday for the following month we are able to create a timeline of healing. We are fortunate that this lesion has resolved after one treatment. Some lesions require more than one treatment. Horses with pale pigmentation around the eyes should have regular check ups to identify actinic keratosis lesions or SCC so it can be managed early. Use of sunscreen and fly masks help these horses in warmer weather with increased sun exposure.

This now 16 year old TB gelding presented for non weight bearing lameness of the right hind limb. A tibial tuberosity fracture was diagnosed. Due to the presence of a fracture line communicating with the medial femorotibial joint and the increased risk of a general anesthetic the repair was performed standing and the tibial tuberosity was stabilized ( pulling forces are exerted by the quadriceps and patellar ligaments). This horse was an ideal candidate for this procedure which has not been described previously. The combination of a great surgical candidate as well as an understanding and dedicated owner led to great success in this case. He is now enjoying his winter turnout at the farm!

A great article by Nicole Kitchener from Horse Canada. When it comes to rehabilitating a horse from a serious injury, not enough can be said about the importance of a dedicated and loving owner. Emily Walker proved her resilience and abilities as she brought her horse Tus Nua to where she is today! It was wonderful to be able to follow this special mare’s recovery.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

We are lucky to have an excellent recovery team here at the hospital. It’s nice when a paper is published that validates the way we do things. By providing head and tail rope recovery to all our patients getting up from a general anesthetic we feel that we can provide the best support. #oeh #equinehospital #equinesurgery #servingyoubetter

Nuclear Scintigraphy images of the patient are acquired using a Gamma Camera, and areas of abnormal isotope uptake are identified. The pelvis is being imaged in the picture above. The radioactive isotope Technitium (TC-99) is excreted through the horses urine therefore strict protocols are followed to ensure patient and staff safety. As shown Sarah, RVT and Mike are wearing their personal protective equipment which includes, lab coat, gloves, boot covers and a dosimeter to measure radiation exposure. Mares and fillies also have their tails tied (as shown) to limit any chance of urine contamination. #oeh #equinehospital #nuclearscintigraphy

This 3 year old Clydesdale filly presented with severe effusion in the left carpal sheath. Filling could be seen laterally above the carpus. Radiographs showed a bony spike (osteochondroma) at the back of the radius that was causing damage to the deep digital flexor tendon. This would have led to small bleeds and increased fluid in the canal from chronic irritation and inflammation. The surgical procedure: tenoscopy was performed standing with a local block and CRI of sedation to reduce the risk of anesthesia and recovery for this lady. 6 weeks after surgery the effusion in the sheath was completely resolved. #oeh #equinehospital #equinesurgery #osteocondroma #tenoscopy @ Ontario Equine Hospital

The diagnostic modality of Nuclear Scintigraphy is often recommended in a variety of lameness cases such as poor performance, multifocal areas, upper limbs or pelvis when nerve blocking isnt an option, or Pre-purchase exams. However have you ever wondered what type of information you receive? Nuclear Scans are available as Full body or Half body scans. The patient is imaged from the foot all the way to the pelvis. A detailed report is composed by Dr. Bonder to determine which... pathology is clinically relevant. All information is shared with referring Veterinarian and client. The images attached are an example of a Full Body Sport Horse scan with Soft tissue phase added. #oeh #nuclearscintigraphy #lameness #diagnosticmodality #bonescan @ Ontario Equine Hospital

Frontal third carpal slab fractures are a well documented injury in racehorses. Thin and unstable slab fractures can be removed arthroscopically. Fracture stabilization is the technique of choice if the slab is substantial. This improves stability, healing and reduces the incidence of secondary arthritis. Fixation is achieved with the use of marker needles, arthroscopy and digital radiography. Arthroscopic assessment and debridement of the fracture line as well as removal of associated loose fragmentation is important in the treatment of these cases. #oeh #equinesurgery #equinesurgeon #slabfracture #orthopedicsurgery @ Ontario Equine Hospital

Coffin Bone Sequestrum A 13 year old Paint Gelding was referred to Ontario Equine Hospital for evaluation of LF lameness and suspect foot abscess. Radiographs showed sequestrum formation at the medial solar margin of coffin bone. Hoof testers were applied to medial sole and liquid purulent material was emitted. With a nerve block and tourniquet in place the sole was debrided and a tract was followed to the affected coffin bone. The sequestrum was located and removed. A regional limb perfusion was performed with antibiotics to penetrate the bone. The bone was then curretted lightly to healthy normal bone and flushed with sterile saline. #oeh #equinehospital #equinesurgery #bonesequestrum #abcess
