IT’S ALL ABOUT SEEING AND HEARING! The OFRA is very grateful about a $4,000 grant approval for large print and audio books expected to arrive by June 2021! Back in February 2020, Sandy Fulcher, also known as Sointu to the Finnish community, a retired schoolteacher, started to work on a grant application with the Retired Teachers of Ontario, Algoma District 3 (RTO). Sandy’s grant application under PSTO - Project Service to Others, is intended for Suomi Eesti Maja, Uusi Koti a...nd Kotitalo (3 phases) of the Finnish Resthome. Sandy says, All of these homes/buildings have their own libraries in them, however, all the books in these libraries have been donations from the residents, staff and volunteers. There has never been any money for a library budget to purchase new materials. All of the material will be new and recent publications purchased from Canadian book suppliers. There will be three totes, each housing 10 to 12 large print books, 10 to 12 audio books and a cd player. A tote will be placed in each of the three homes and will be circulated every 4 months so that each home has an opportunity to read and hear something new. Sandy wishes to thank her assistants Linda Ruhanen, Carol Kirkland-Boissineau, Rita Wagner, Merrilyn Webb and Geraldine Yeo. All of the assistants listed are retired teachers and a couple of them are / were teacher-librarians and together we will create interesting reading material for the residents of the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association, says Sandy Fulcher. Heidi Schell, Purchasing & Marketing Agent for The OFRA says, I would like to extend my gratitude to Sointu for all that she does for our organization. As a dedicated volunteer, Sointu has done a remarkable job on the set-up and upkeep of the Uusi Koti library. The atmosphere is so welcoming that once you are there, you simply want to embrace the serenity with a hot cup of coffee or tea curled up on the love seat with a great read! We are very grateful to Sointu and everyone that helped with this grant process to make it a reality. Anything that helps to enhance the lives of our seniors is always appreciated and welcomed. Thank you to RTO (Retired Teachers of Ontario) Algoma District 3 for this grant and the wonderful opportunity to enrich the lives of seniors in Sault Ste. Marie.
