Consider these 5 Tips if your mortgage is coming up for renewal:... Tip#1: Research available rates What are other financial institutions offering. How do they compare to what you are paying or being offered. Tip#2 Remember the lowest rate is not necessarily the best. Look at the other terms and conditions. Find out what are the penalties associated with the lowest rate. For example sometimes in order to make any changes or break your mortgage you may need to sell the home. Tip#4: Do you have any projects that you want to complete. Do you need to put aside money for your child's post secondary education, do you need to do home renovations, are you interested in buying investment property. If so renewal time is an excellent time to refinance and access the equity in your home. Tip#5 Don't leave your renewal to the last minute. The best time to start looking at your options is 4 to 6 months BEFORE your mortgage renewal date. This will give you sufficient time to look at your options and make any corrections if needed.
