Dr. Still speaking about varied methods to adjust the body (Research and Practice): 91 I want to make it plain that there are many ways of adjusting bones. And when one operator does not use the same method as another, it does not show criminal ignorance on the part of either, but simply the getting of results in a different manner. A skilled mechanic has many methods by which he can produce the desired result. A fixed point, a lever, a twist, or a screw power, can be and are... used by all operators. The choice of methods is a matter to be decided by each operator and depends on his own skill and judgment. One operator is right handed, the other left. They will choose different methods to accomplish the same thing. Every operator should use his own judgment and choose his own method of adjusting all bones of the body. It is not a matter of imitation and doing just as some successful operator does, but the bringing of the bone from the abnormal to the normal. See more

Dr. Still speaking about immaterial things in the body and how to deal with them (Philosophy and Mechanical Principles of Osteopathy): It matters very little to man where mind, motion, and matter came from, the one place or the other. They are all in his make-up, and he is interested in keeping them all healthy. If he is a doctor, he is interested in quick cures, because his living depends on his success. The doctor does not have to furnish his patients mind, matter, or motio...n. His work is to keep the body adjusted so it can supply itself with brain and muscle; then mind and motion will appear and keep the laboratory full of the choicest chemicals and free from disease. Healthy organs and food are what keeps a man healthy. The doctor can aid in keeping the organs in place. This he can do if he knows the forms and functionings of the different parts of the body. If not, he is of but little use or benefit to the sick See more

Dr. Still speaking about the multi-factorial functions of structures (Research and Practice): Is a bone personally responsible in performing any duty beyond its service as a brace or support for the body while in the erect position? Does its personality extend beyond that purpose? Is it a house in which a process of manufacturing substances for repairing takes place? Does it construct its own habitation? A thigh bone to all intents and purposes is a personality in receiving, repairing and constructing the bone directly from blood.

"To be OOA approved means that you've had a significant amount of training in the basic sciences. Anatomy and physiology are huge, of course. But it also means your hands-on training is exceptional, it's beyond what is considered an average level of osteopathic practitioner." "If Operators focus on an allopathic pathology, then they are likely to narrow their scope. In other words, they will seek out the lesion in a highly specific area and remain fixed to that region instead of searching for lesions where they are occurring. Operators must broaden their scope to seek out the lesions that are contributing to a change in the patient’s health state." "As an osteopathic practitioner, I also work with other members of the OOA because if patients aren't able to come see me, because I'm booked, or because this location is not convenient, I can refer my patient to the OOA website so they can find themselves an osteopathic practitioner that's closest to them. Or, I can see what other graduates that I can help my patients feel most comfortable with." Dr. Still speaking about adjustment (Research and Practice): The philosophy of manipulations is based upon an absolute knowledge of the form and function of all bones belonging to the bony framework of the human body. We must know the position and purpose of each bone and be thoroughly acquainted with each of its articulations. Without this knowledge our work will be a failure.

The name I have given to this particular pattern is the bell-shaped thorax. The name was chosen for ease of communication when talking to other practitioners; the thorax in this position looks bell-shaped under the right condition. That right condition presents itself when viewing the ribcage with all skin and muscles removedthough if you are seeing your patient like this, it’s probably too late for you to help him. Thankfully, we can easily palpate this lesioned thorax to ascertain its shape. Read "A Bell-Shaped Thorax" by OOA Member, Lee Jarvis on Page 4 of Issue 8: www.osteopathyst.com/issue-8/#page-4

"Being OOA-approved means that you are reaching the high standards of training that the OOA accepts. It is making sure that you're accountable for the professionalism standards and the ethical standards for treating patients in Ontario. I'm very proud to be a part of the OOA." Dr. Still speaking about the importance of the thought process to an Osteopath (Research and Practice): My object is to make the osteopath a philosopher, and place him on the rock of reason. Then I will not have the worry of writing details of how to treat any organ of the human body, because he is qualified to the degree of knowing what has produced variations of all kinds in form and motion.

When looking at the patient it is important to consider the three-dimensional mechanical picture that the patient presents. Mechanics does not denote simple joint movement; it encompasses a holistic understanding of the distortions and deformations in hard and soft tissues, as well as the way all tissues relate to one another with respect to gravity. This mechanical picture displays stresses, strains, vectors of pull, and other alterations that are landing on, and passing through, hard and soft tissues. It is our job to examine how the body is responding to these fundamental changes. "The OOA is widely recognized because the standards are incredibly high. There are no other organizations where members have to exceed 4,000 hours of training plus 1,000 hours practicum. OOA members have paid their dues." Marc Tellez, Osteopathic Manual Practitioner at Bannock's Body Mechanics and Member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association!

Undressing the client for osteopathic treatment is common in Europe but is not part of Canadian practice. A well trained practitioner can palpate a patient effectively through loose clothing and will not require a patient to disrobe for diagnosis or treatment.
