Learn how our program evaluates adult returns, including angler reports, fishways, genetics, fin clipping, underwater videos, and more! https://youtu.be/QulCYBdKaW4 Thanks to Ontario Trillium Foundation for funding the video, Ontario Power Generation for sponsoring the program, and Ontario Natural Resources and Forestry for co-leading the program.
Do you recognize this site? If you've ever been to Belfountain Conservation Area, you may notice some differences - the headpond no longer exists, and instead, the Credit River flows strong and clear over the lowered dam. Check out https://cvc.ca//belfountain-conservation-area-restoration/ for more details. Thanks to Cabela's for supporting this project that improves habitat (water quality and temperature) for Atlantic Salmon!

Interested in what the Lake Ontario Management Unit was up to in 2019? The annual report is now available, including information on fish passage studies and salmonid migration in the Credit and Ganaraska rivers: http://www.glfc.org/loc_mgmt_unit/LOA%2020.01.pdf
Did you know that Atlantic Salmon are repeat spawners? Here is a scale from an adult that returned last fall to spawn. Based on the presence of a spawning check, which happens when adults resorb some of the calcium in their scale during spawning, this fish had also spawned in 2019.
Once again Normandale Fish Culture Station stocked retired Atlantic Salmon brood stock at the club ramp November 23 & 30. All fish have a "spaghetti" tag so please report all catches to the MNRF. A big thank you to the staff for their hard work
It's week 3 in our classroom hatchery presentations! This week, learn about how art and science are intertwined, about Atlantic Salmon identification and life strategies, and about the program coordinator's journey through science, photography and art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNJrJ7TMSgw This is just in time for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (https://www.un.org//observa/women-and-girls-in-science-day), made to help achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. #InternationalDayOfWomenInScience
Our classroom hatchery program is going virtual, and it's open to any class in any location! We will show students Atlantic Salmon development from egg to fry, and teach about their biology, history, and ecology through weekly videos. Teachers will have the opportunity to schedule live question and answer sessions with our biologists and will be supplied with curriculum-linked lesson plans about Atlantic Salmon to use throughout the year. In May we will go on a virtual field trip to release the fish in a local restoration stream. This program offers excellent educational opportunities connected to fish biology, natural and cultural history, habitats, ecosystems, and environmental stewardship. See the flyer for registration - it's free!
Week #2's video is now available! Watch the eggs being installed into their incubation tray so we can see them develop over the next few weeks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6N4UXJWSQc
#GivingTuesday is less than one week away! Giving Tuesday hosts an opportunity for people to give back to non-profit organizations and charities. This December ...1st, please consider supporting Ontario Streams. Support from our donors allows us to continue to enhance and restore stream and wetland habitat in Ontario. To make a one time donation, become a monthly donor, or make a memorial donation, please visit www.ontariostreams.on.ca/give or the Canada Helps website at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/ontario-streams/ Thank you in advance for your support!
In early November, we saw a male Atlantic Salmon battle it out with a jack Chinook Salmon. Watch them fight for control of a redd.
We're still looking for teachers of grades 1-8 from Durham, Northumberland, and Peterborough to host an Atlantic Salmon classroom hatchery! For this year, the program will be virtual, but will return to in-person in 2021. See flyer for additional details, and share with your kid's teacher!
An Atlantic Salmon was photographed back in September jumping at Etienne Brule Park on the Humber River. Thanks to @jeffdickie for sharing his awesome photo!
The warmer weather has a few fish moving up the fishways. Here's a lovely male Brown Trout today through the Credit River camera at Streetsville.
If you guessed 5 species of salmonids, you were correct! The video points them out.
