Pre-Pandemic 2019 Juniors

Okay, first there was the virus. Then the really warm weather that turned on thousands of 'green' steelhead way too early. Then the MNR studies at the Dennys tr...ap. Then the social distancing. We got our eggs, but put in way too many hours. The eggs and sperm were stripped and bagged and sent to the hatchery...Fertilized and resting quiet nicely now....but I've never witnessed one weird season like this one. Thanks guys. Fish are raised and released for YOU! NOT JUST A FEW!

This year's egg take was the weirdest I've seen in the 20 years since the Ontario Steelheaders and Lake Huron Fishing club started this specific program,,,,March and early April spring weather sent the majority of the fish on their way to Walkerton and above to all the gravel beds upriver..Covid meant social distancing and masks. The MNR were doing an important dam sampling study. And the spawners were either green and tight, some even spent.. For the little time we actually had at the trap they got the job done...Thank you 'volunteers, both ladies and gentlemen..For you dedication and success.

I like to refer to this cement contraption as the 'Abortion' On the Saugeen. This is what happens when some people have no idea about fish, water flow and the c...onsequences. The latest Maple Hill fishway was designed with no adequate flow control. It can't properly collect water flow and also can't hold back too much water flow. At times, more than 90 percent of dam's flow goes through the turbines carrying adult and smolt steelhead with it ,,,and death. For more than 50 years the Ontario Steelheaders have been asking for the removal of Maple Hill dam. Thank God for the stocking efforts of the Ontario Steelheaders and Lake Huron Fishing club. We have the best steelhead fishery east of the Rocky Mountains, but please a little more common sense! See more

Ontario Steelheaders 2020 Fall Derby is cancelled. With a 50 person limit on gatherings, it would be impossible to socially distance in the event of bad weather. Regretfully we must cancel the Fall 2020 derby. ... The tentative 2021 spring derby is scheduled for May 1st. Stay Safe Folks.

This is for serious steelheaders. It illustrates just how wild fish can respond from disaster if given the opportunity. On the Saugeen, it's time for Bruce Generating to quit wasting funds on foolish projects and instead buyout the Maple Hill generating plant and it's turbines for removal...or put a much needed swim around on the other side of the river. The Beatty Saugeen is waiting for the fish.

This bug around us is making some significant changes in stocking plans. Michigan will not be collecting rainbow (steelhead) eggs for their hatcheries this spring. Neither will the Lake Huron Fishing Club/Ontario Steelheaders for the Saugeen program. Another note, Michigan is still releasing large numbers of advanced spring released coho into Huron and they will benefit the Huron fishery
