Just a heads up to everyone, our work with MNRF rabies units has helped to identify these areas through surveillance efforts and hopefully this baiting will help stop the further spread of rabies in these areas
Something pet owners need to be aware of
It’s that time of year again , skunk breeding season is in full swing here in midwestern Ontario, here’s a little throwback https://youtu.be/hKotpYo9v8M
110 years ago, one man set out to rid Texas of Malaria - with the help of what was then a very unlikely source... bats! Dr. Charles A. Campbell had a simple pla...n. He knew that bats eat mosquitoes, and believed that if he could entice thousands of bats to live in Malaria-ridden areas, they would single-wingedly eradicate the disease. After years of fruitless experimentation with small roosting boxes, he decided to go BIG, with a 30-foot tower containing roosting shelves, guano lures, and a meal plan - three large hams! The $500 contraption was, alas, a flop. Campbell realized that he didn’t understand bats enough to provide suitable homes. He spent months studying caves and roosts to learn what bats needed most. In 1911 he constructed a new, improved tower at Mitchell's Lake, where 90% of the locals were sick with Malaria. Within 4 years, Mitchell’s Lake was Malaria-free. Word spread of the bat roost’s success, and 16 "Municipal Bat Roosts" went up from San Antonio to Italy, eradicating the disease wherever they were placed. Dr. Campbell, inventor of the bat house, medical pioneer, unintentional bat scientist, was responsible for saving hundreds of lives from Malaria, and for the subsequent statewide protection of all bats in Texas for over 30 years. He proved that bats could coexist with human beings, and make our lives better because of it. So for Febuary, remember Dr. Campbell, and remember to love a bat today! (Thank you to Mark N. for finding the photo!)
So very sad to see , Rabies is nothing to fool with and any animal bite should be followed up with medical attention
We all know moms will go above and beyond for their children, and mother bats are no exception! #MothersDay
Unfortunately this sort of news seems to be more prevalent all the time , it's much safer and cost effective to hire a pro for some jobs
Bald face hornet nests are a job we get called on to remove frequently, this is one from this week . These nests show up in many varied spots , very often in trees but we have removed them from attics and quite often in cracks on decks and porches and inside soffits on the outside of buildings as well . The second picture shows the larvae inside the best that the queen is busy producing and the many workers are busy feeding and raising to help build the nest. The workers can become very aggressive and agitated if disturbed and unlike bees , don't lose the stinger and die so multiple stings are possible with a nasty shot of venom , keep clear of these nests to avoid being stung .
In the long run it's much cheaper to call proffesional help when it comes to wildlife problems
Another interesting day for us here at Duncan wildlife control, we where contacted by OPP about this young fawn in a garage and where able to safely remove it , After consulting with a wildlife rehab centre about its condition we will be placing it close by the area so the doe can find it and will monitor the situation to be sure it doesn't find its way back into someone's garage again
Unfortunately misinformation like this is all to common in the world today , beavers do NOT hibernate and maybe this animal control officer needs some education.
London raccoon removal
Today we received a call about a sick skunk at a residence in Kitchener Ontario , The resident had tried the local SPCA as well as a couple of other local past and wildlife control companies none of whom were able to provide removal services for this sick animal ,we were able to successfully catch the skunk and remove it and do to our close cooperation with the ministry natural resources rabies unit will be sending it in for testing to help assist in the rabies control operations .
Hopefully this will help to put the brakes on the rabies spread locally, in the meantime we will be working closely with MNRF rabies unit to help with providing samples to test , keep an eye on your pets and kids around strange acting wildlife .
Yes I see you there , and no you can't stay this is a raccoon free home lol . Another case of an unsecured roof soffit intersection allowing wildlife entry , although we weren't able to capture this raccoon we where able to scare it back out of the hole and then repair and secure it to prevent any future re-entry.
Sorry squirrels no more living in this home for you ! Almost done just way to windy today to rehang the evestrough
This photo shows how persistent squirrels can be when it comes to a structure they have taken residence in , as seen in the photo the homeowner tried to block them out with the light coloured block of wood and they simply chewed back in , This is when we got the call to remove the squirrels and later in the week once we have everyone of them out we will repair the damage .
Finish dirt and everything back the way it was
