The second of four lunchtime webinars, part of our Kemptville Winter Woodlot Conference, received rave reviews today. Retired MNR Forest Science Specialist Al Stinson presented on the long term benefits of tree marking for woodlot owners. If you missed it, the recording is now available on our YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOziIGV4PMg #OWA #EOMF #ontariowoodlot #easternontariomodelforest #forest #stewardship #sustainability #conservation #treemarking #silviculture

Great to see this recognition for Peter. He is also a stalwart member of OWA's Renfrew Chapter!
Great to have Shan Shukla working with us this year on our Community Forest Owners Cooperative Pilot Projects in Fleetwood and Huronia/Couchiching. Shan is currently enrolled in the Master of Forest Conservation program at the University of Toronto with a background in the natural sciences, and previous clinical research experience at SickKids and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Shan also currently volunteers with the Bruce Trail Conservancy as a Land Steward. He enjoys being outdoors and is excited to learn about the management of landowner woodlots in Ontario. With his research experience and developing forest management knowledge, he hopes to make a positive impact on landowner woodlot management practices with the OWA. #forest #stewardship #conservation #sustainability #universityoftoronto

Common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) holds onto its leaves and berries later than most shrubs, making it easy to spot in the fall. Moreover, because most of th...e surrounding vegetation has gone dormant by mid-November, you can reduce the impact on native species by managing buckthorn during this time. For information managing buckthorn, download the Best Management Practices Guide here: http://www.invadingspecies.com/4-terrestrial-plant-resourc/ #InvasiveSpecies #Plants #Conservation

Many thanks to Win Laar for sharing these pics of a massive Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) from a recent excursion to Locust Grove in Queenston in the Niagara Pen...insula. A great visit with OWA member Tony Bull and family, and tour of their woodlot this morning.
Today is National Tree Day. Arnprior has some special trees. One of them is the Royal Oak planted as a sapling in 1860 at Arnpriors Galilee Retreat Centre. Gil...lies Grove is home to Ontario's tallest White Pine tree at 154 feet. We have some special trees on the Macnamara Trail as well. One is a pre-settlement Eastern White Cedar on the "island chain"* just past the new Nopiming Loop Trail extension. (currently reachable in winter*). See attached photo. Another of the more than 12 varieties of trees identified on the trail is a beautiful Eastern Hemlock at stop #13 of the Trail. Look it up on the interactive version of our Trail Guide. If you have American Beech trees in your woodlot watch out for Beech Bark Disease. The disease is spread to beech trees from a scale insect that looks like white... fluff. The year after the fluff shows up on the bark red blotches appear. 2 or 3 years later the tree will be totally dead and only good for firewood. The beech trees in this part of Ontario are doomed from this disease because it keeps spreading. Even new regeneration will be infected which means the species will disappear. See more
