Day three of #mentalillnessawarenessweek and today we bring awareness to #schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness, that affects 300,000 Canadians. It most often appears in men in their late teens/early twenties. Finding the causes for this mental illness is difficult as it is unique for each person. SOURCE: Schizophrenia.ca (also a great source for more information and supports).... There are many misconceptions about Schizophrenia. Two major ones include: - Schizophrenia only involves delusions and hallucinations - Although often a symptom, individuals living with Schizophrenia may also experience blunted emotions, low motivation, disorganized speech, a lack in desire to form social relationships. - Schizophrenia makes people dangerous - This myth contributes heavily to the stigma surrounding this illness. The vast majority of people living with Schizophrenia are nonviolent.
