Ootischenia and Castlegar Fire responded to a chip truck trailer fire at the truck brake check in Ootischenia, west of Castlegar, at noon yesterday. A brake on the rear passenger side of the trailer had heated up and caught on fire, then melted through the steel floor of the trailer catching the wood chips on fire. The driver was able to unhook his tractor from the trailer. The fire was difficult to get to as it was under 10 feet of wood chips. The trailer had to have its t...op tarp removed and back 500lb door opened in order to access the fire. In total 16 firefighters from a mutual combined force, 5 fire apparatus and a backhoe were required to get to the floor of the chip truck. No firefighters were injured during all actions taken. Half of the chips were able to be salvaged for use and none of them left the asphalt. Ootischenia and Castlegar Firefighters worked well together on the fire ground and did a great job in problem solving a difficult fire to access. Ootischenia Fire would like to thank Castlegar Fire, Coleman contracting, YRB, RCMP and BCAS for being on site to assist in their respective roles.

Heres what RDCK and Ootischenia Fire Fighters have to say about their passion for serving their community.
Ootischenia Fire is currently taking applications for firefighters. Here is what RDCK and Ootischenia Firefighters have to say about their passion to help their community.
At 7:30 am this morning Ootischenia Fire responded to a call for a tree that had its top broke off in the wind and was resting on a houses incoming power line. Firefighters secured the scene with a 30 foot safety perimeter of the line and blocked traffic on Hillview road that would have to drive under the compromised line. Fortis was contacted, but have a long list of outages from the wind storm. Fortis advised that traffic should not drive under the line. YRB was contacted... and arrived on scene to look after traffic control. Reminder to all please stay back at least 10m from power lines if they have trees leaning on them, as the line could break if the tree shifts.
