Last week, Kelsey Kiers began her new role as the Operations Assistant! Let's welcome her to the OAM family! Welcome Kelsey! Hello everyone! My name is Kelsey Kiers and I have recently joined Open Arms Mission as the Operations Assistant. Growing up in a Christian home, I was always taught that God would lead me to where He wanted me to go. Yet I sometimes struggled with this idea, not exactly sure where He was leading me. The good news is that He knew all along where I was ...heading. With countless decisions, 10 years of schooling, and three degrees, it has been a long road. But God has closed one door and opened another with perfect timing, and I am grateful for every moment because they have all led me to this point. God has been gently pushing me in the right direction for my entire life, allowing me to gain all of the knowledge and experience I would need to serve the community around me. And now I am able to use all of the skills I’ve acquired to help the people in the City of Welland. I’ve lived here for most of my life, and to be given the ability to help in any way is both humbling and inspiring. I am beyond excited to join the team here at OAM. I have always had a heart for this organization, offering support in various ways and volunteering my time here on Saturday mornings to serve lunch. To be able to serve here in a larger capacity is a dream come true. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for me here at Open Arms Mission.

Be still, and know that I am God...Take quiet time today to consider the works of God in your own life, how He has redeemed you and called you by name. Has He changed your heart or an attitude? Has He lifted your chin to see His face more clearly? Has He helped you to forgive yourself or others? These are some of God’s most phenomenal works, works to behold, works that help us to be still and know that He is God.

You’d think that I’d be doing alright during this pandemic as a PSW, but it turns out that being an essential worker doesn’t guarantee anything. As a PSW, I’m only allowed to work at one location at a time. So, when that location decides to reduce your hours to save themselves money...well it isn’t exactly the most helpful choice in the world. It creates a lot of stress for our family. Speaking of which, life is about to get that much harder with schools continuing online in ...the current lockdown. Not only do I have to continue to try and support my family with the reduced hours, but now I have to be their teacher as well. As if I wasn’t already stressed out. Between this and the financial difficulties, I just feel so overwhelmed. One of the things I really appreciate about this place is how they’re able to help people. Knowing that my groceries can be at least partially taken care of because of Open Arms is such a blessing. It just takes that little bit of pressure off of me. Sure, I still have to work and teach and cook and clean I still have to take care of my family. But not having to worry about the financial side of things for some of my groceries means so much to me. I’m so grateful that this place is here.

Thank you Welland Jackfish for organizing the "Home Run for the Hungry food drive thru!" The food drive thru is this coming Saturday November 28th from 11am-1pm at the Welland Stadium! More people than ever are facing crisis. We are thankful for our supporters who stand by our side and help us respond to the rise in need in Welland and the Niagara Region.

Mr. Brady Grade 5 Alexander Kuska Catholic School Good morning,... I wanted to wish all of you a Merry Christmas! It was a time of great excitement in the classroom a few days ago. I also wanted to share something that I decided based on our classroom discussions about Advent. In religion class we talked about ways that we can prepare for the birth of Jesus. Every student in our class shared that we should help out the less fortunate. I usually like to get the students a small Christmas gift. This year I decided to re-evaluate how I could do something special with our class. I decided to make a donation on behalf of the class to the Open Arms Mission in Welland in lieu of a gift. I announced this in class and I couldn't have been prouder of the response. Students were clapping in agreement with this decision. It was a very touching moment. Merry Christmas!

For the past 20 years, Francine Horton and her Grade 2 class have been working hard to support Open Arms! We are so grateful for their yearly donation! My name is Jason. I had been working as a mechanic before I was laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now I’m unemployed and living with my parents, not something I consider to be an ideal situation. It’s frustrating going from being independent to having to move back in because of this pandemic. I went from being self-sufficient to barely being able to make ends meet. I feel so isolated from my family and my friends and it’s just so frustrating to live in this situation. On...e of the only things I’m thankful for right now is Open Arms because of how they’ve been able to help support me. Even though I appreciate my parents and how they’re helping me, it’s still my responsibility to pay my own bills and groceries. It’s gotten a lot harder without my old job, so having Open Arms around to help out with groceries each month means a lot. It lets me actually focus on paying my bills on time since I don’t have to spend as much on food. It’s not just boring food either. There’s a ton of variety and fresh produce sometimes too. The staff are always so cheerful and kind, and it really makes me feel good when I go there. I know that without Open Arms I’d struggle to eat well and eat enough. I’m so thankful for Open Arms’ support. #openarms

We are so honoured to be named the Welland Jackfish charity of choice for 2021! The Jackfish are extremely happy about this opportunity to partner with an organization that does so much for the City of Welland and surrounding areas said Jackfish President and CEO Ryan Harrison. The goal of the Jackfish is to really give back to the community and we feel this partnership will really allow us to do just that.
