Annaya was just a month and a half old when she made her first visit to the Grace McGregor B. care centre in Managua, Nicaragua. Annaya’s mother, Iris, had a healthy pregnancy, and her ultrasounds had not revealed Annaya’s #CleftLip and cleft palate. After her evaluation, Annaya was cleared for her first surgery to repair her cleft lip in April. Iris was overjoyed to see her daughter after her surgery, I feel that I am living in a dream seeing my daughter with her lip repair...ed. Annaya continues her comprehensive follow-up care, and when the time is right, her second surgery will be scheduled to repair her #CleftPalate. Thirteen-year-old Justin from Stratford, Ontario hosted a corn sale in support of Operation Smile Canada. His initiative was part of Skeletons of Vivian Line annual fall campaign to fundraise for our medical programs. This year, thanks to a generous community member, all gifts made and fundraised, up to $10,000, will be matched. Justins Corn Stand sold over 2400 cobs of corn and collected donations from members of the Stratford community. After two days, he raised over $3000 for a total of $6220.30 with the match! Thanks to Justin, Skeletons of Vivian Line, and everyone who supported this initiative, 24 children will receive new smiles. That is something we can all smile about!

As a child, Julia felt shy because of the way her cleft condition affected her speech. But at the age of 3, Julia had her first surgery to repair her cleft palate, and her second when she turned 7. Since her surgeries, Julia joined us on a medical mission in the Philippines and decided to use her newfound confidence to help others. Now 17, Julia advocates and raises funds for Operation Smile Philippines through her home-based online bakeshop. Thanks to timely surgery, Julia now has the confidence to face the world with her beautiful new smile!

Its #ThrowBackThursday and today we flash back to our medical mission in Nampula, Mozambique that concluded in August of 2019. We couldnt be more thankful for our wonderful partners and team of volunteers who delivered a total of 71 new smiles on that mission! The final celebration of patients and volunteers was filled with songs, dances, and huge smiles. Many of these children returned to us for follow up care. Their results are incredible, and their smiles are brighter than ever!

Staying connected and continuing to care for our patients is extremely important, especially right now. Operation Smile Dominican Republic Child Life Specialist, Rosanna Martinez is just one of our many volunteers who goes above and beyond to ensure we continue to care for our patients while they wait for their beautiful new smile. Rossanna is staying connected to our patients with virtual counselling. Through phone calls, WhatsApp and video calls, Rosanna provides support for children and their families who have concerns and worries during this extra-waiting period. This past March, Santiago and his mother Javiera traveled to our mission site in Nicaragua. But this was their second time arriving to our mission site in the hopes of free, safe surgery. The first time Santiago had gotten sick after they arrived and wasnt cleared for surgery. This time, he passed all health evaluations. But less than 24 hours before Santiago would finally receive his new smile, his surgery was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Canadian nurse Helen Wagner has been on 11 medical missions with Operation Smile since she began volunteering with us in 2006. This past March, Helen was on our first all-female medical mission in Morocco. It was there that she encountered two babies who were extremely malnourished due to their cleft palates. By the end of the mission, thanks to our incredible medical volunteers, Helen was relieved to learn that both babies were gaining weight and are on their way to being healthy enough to receive safe, free surgery when its safe to do so. Yesterday you met precious Damian from Bolivia. Thanks to partners like you, he received the gift of a beautiful new smile! Damians transformation is the reason why timely cleft surgery is so important for young children. Without surgery, children in low- and middle-income countries where access to basic health and surgery is limited are at the highest risk of dying during the first year of their lives. After a successful surgery, Nora and her son Damian returned home where their family and friends were eager to see Damians new smile. Damian is now a happy little boy with a bright future ahead! When Damian was born with a cleft lip and palate, his mother Nora was shocked. Nothing had shown up on the ultrasounds. Surviving on less than $220/month, Damians parents knew they could never afford surgery for their son. Jayden arrived to our mission site last year in the Dominican Republic with his parents. They hoped Jaydens cleft lip and palate could be repaired. Unfortunately, Jayden was too ill at the time. Nine-year old Levis is a young boy full of energy who loves playing soccer. He and his mother travelled to our mission site in Managua, Nicaragua this past March in the hopes of receiving safe surgery. Getting his new smile was a dream for Levis and his family. Continuing the care and staying connected to our patients was top of mind for Operation Smile Nicaraguas care centre when COVID-19 struck the country. The temporary closing of the care centre meant that pre-and post-operative care had to be done virtually to keep both our patients and our volunteers safe. Nothing had prepared Soumia for the shock she felt when her son Elmehdi was born with a cleft lip. But after hearing about a medical mission in Oujda, Morocco, in March 2020, Sourmias worry quickly turned to hope. At the mission - one of the last before the pandemic halted surgeries, Elmehdi passed his comprehensive health evaluation and was selected for surgery. Sirivan was in despair when her daughter Pavinee was born with a cleft lip. Nutrition is a big part of comprehensive cleft care. Now more than ever, we want our patients and their families to know they have our support. Once patients enter our care, we continuously support them. Many countries where we work, were supplying families with RUTF, formulas and meal supplements through an expanded Nutrition Program. Happy Fathers Day! Fathers like Armand know just how important safe surgery is for children all around the world. When his daughter Brunel was born with a cleft lip, Armand never stopped believing that one day, his beautiful baby girl would receive the smile she deserved. In 2018, after traveling for 13 hours, Brunel and Armand reached our mission site in Antisirabe, Madagascar. At long last, Brunel received free, life-changing surgery and her dad was right by her side the whole time!
