Heavier, harder, and faster often isn't better when it comes to your workouts. While an intensity-over-everything approach might work for the short term, in the long term it can cause overtraining and burnout. Some not-so-fun symptoms of overreaching in the gym include:... Lack of appetite or food cravings Poor mental acuity and low creativity Irregular hormones or irregular/no menstrual cycle Injuries and chronic aches Low immunity and frequent sickness Increased body fat and/or decreased muscle mass Decreased performance and strength Trouble sleeping, wired and tired Connect with an OPEX North Shore professional Coach to find out how you can set yourself up for success in the gym. Hello! My name is Jackie. I am the newest addition to the OPEX North Shore team as a floor Coach. A fun fact about me is that her dog Oshie was rescued from Thailand. I was born and raised on the North Shore. I was competitive in both hockey and horseback riding. Fitness has been a core part of who I am from a young age. I recommitted to my personal fitness journey in my second year of university and I know exactly how difficult it can be to start a new fitness journey. I wa...nt to help others achieve their goals and experience the reward of personal health. I obtained my Bachelor’s of Science in psychology with a minor in nutrition from the University of Utah in May 2020, and will be starting my Doctorate of Physical Therapy in Australia in 2022. I look forward to seeing you on the gym floor in the near future. #professionalcoach

Routine is an essential part of life, especially if you’re chasing health and fitness goals. Typically those who consistently exercise as a non-negotiable part of their routine fall into two camps: morning or evening exercisers. So when exactly is the best time to workout? The bottom line is that for 99% of people, the best time to train is whenever you can fit it consistently into your schedule.... If you’re genuinely interested in performing at an optimal capacity, research suggests that afternoon and evening training sessions are ideal. However, if like most, your primary goals are to ‘look good naked’ or ‘live long and prosper,’ whatever time of day you decide is perfectly fine. The key is to find the time that helps you be most consistent! #fitnessdesignedforYOU

Increase your what?!? Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis Otherwise known as NEAT. This accounts for the number of calories you burn in everyday life outside of exercise, whether that be from walking your dog, sitting at your desk job all day, working manual labor, ect. Calories aren’t only burned in the gym.... Considering food and exercise as a transaction is problematic because the reality is that the gym is not an effective way to burn calories. In the scheme of things, your body burns more energy just through your daily activities than in an hour session in the gym. Making movement a part of your daily life, through actions like a standing desk, regular walks, taking the stairs, going grocery shopping rather than ordering online, and throwing in a random 10 air squats every hour, is a far bigger bang for your buck than focusing only on exercise in the gym. This doesn’t mean skipping your gym sessions though! #OPEXblgs

We are excited to announce that RJ Wolfe (@rj.wolfey) will be joining our team of Professional Coaches. After a fun and engaging sports career in hockey and baseball, RJ found himself in pain. At 21 years old he could not perform a pain free push up or air squat. This experience did not reflect what was normal or expected for his age and ability. Motivated to improve his situation, RJ dove deeper into his study of Kinesiology and concluded that his past training neglected to ...focus on movement quality. When he began following an organized training plan and focussed on moving well, his pain disappeared and his fitness improved in far greater ways than he’d experienced when playing sports alone! After graduating from St Francis Xavier with a B.Sc in Kinesiology in 2014, RJ became a certified personal trainer. Highly motivated to share the benefits of fitness training, he started creating exercise and nutrition plans for those looking to build muscle and lose weight. In 2015, he started working with pro baseball athletes where he gained knowledge and skills in how to best train and support high performance atheletes. In the process of training at this level, RJ realized that his skills, expertise and passion could be of great benefit to not just athletes, but regular folks ready to live healthier more fulfilling lives. RJ entered the active rehab world and started training people with chronic diseases and injuries from car accidents. He enjoyed being able to decrease people’s pain and improve their health through increasing a person’s activity levels and teaching exercise with an emphasis on movement quality. His quest to further guide people in their health and fitness journey led to an encounter with Opex Coaching Certification Program, where he honed in on the principles of yearly planning of exercise and nutrition, stress, recovery and their roles in long-term health. When he's not working, you can find him relaxing with friends at Jericho beach in Vancouver biking, hiking or skiing down a mountain. #professionalcoach

Progress in the fitness world is typically measured by lifting heavier, losing pounds or running faster. But not all goals are so quantifiable. The reality is, you may not constantly get better everyday (or your progress line won’t always be trending upward if you look at it on a graph). There will be days with setbacks, days you can’t complete your workout, injuries to keep you from working out, etc. What’s important is you focus on your long-term goals and know you are s...till on the right track. Every one of the individuals who trains in our gyms has unique values, goals and purposes in life, so it makes sense that progress means something different to each one of them. Our coaches are trained in the holistic OPEX coaching method, which teaches them the tools to create progress that includes, but isn’t limited to physical characteristics like aerobic capacity and fat loss. #fitnessdesignedforYOU

Cardio can be beneficial to losing weight and getting healthy, that’s no secret. Moving your body every day is vital for your health, but it's not the only exercise you should be doing if you want to lose weight. A great way to aid weight loss is strength training. Seriously! Weight training will allow you to gain muscle (in all the right places!) and burn fat. It will boost your metabolic rate, especially as you start to gain lean mass, which will speed up fat loss. ...Losing weight can be great for overall health, but at the end of the day try to remember the number on the scale isn’t the most important factor. Listen to what your body is telling you and tune in to how you are feeling physically and mentally, that will help determine your overall health. #fitnessdesignedforYOU

Over time we as humans have been moving less. This has created a loss of love for movement and physical activity and their positive intentions. This has also created poor behaviors around why we should move and nourish our bodies. Let’s change this.... Let’s move because we can. Because it enhances our lives. And because it’s what our bodies are made to do. Move because you can at OPEX North Shore! Talk to a professional coach using the link in bio. #movebecauseyoucan

We all know that in exercise it’s important to have a solid foundation of quality movement and basic skills before we move to more complex endeavours. Nutrition is no different. Check out our life-changing nutrition tips below Chew your food and eat mindfully Chewing your food 20-30 times per mouthful is an important first step in the digestive process. Put down your fork between bites and avoid using water to help you swallow unchewed mouthfuls. Eat for mental ac...uity It’s best to sit down in a distraction-free environment, away from screens, and in a relaxed state. Try to block out time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so you’re not eating on the go and in front of your computer. Learn to prepare your own food Homemade meals let you know where your food is coming from and is more cost-effective. You can portion control and know exactly how much protein/fats/veggies/etc you are eating. Meal prepping is beneficial as well so you aren’t rushing around last minute trying to decide what to eat for dinner. Small upgrades add up to long-term progress Switching up your diet drastically can be a recipe for failure in the long-term. Making small swaps to your current meals can have a big impact on the nutrient density of your diet. #OPEXnourish #HealthyHabits
