Labour Day in Northumberland This year’s theme is a Plan for Progress and a Plan for Action In 2020, Northumberland Labour Council’s Annual Labour Day will be c...elebrated in a unique way in order to support ongoing social distancing expectations. In 2020 there will be two parts to this year’s Labour Day celebrations in Northumberland: Part 1 is the Labour Day Caravan which is open to all; Part 2 is the Northumberland Labour Day Art event which is open to all Children and youth 17 years of age and under, living in Northumberland. PART 1 1) THE Labour Day CARAVAN- Monday, September 7, 2020 What is involved: A caravan of vehicles will start from the Home Hardware parking lot area, 117 Toronto Road, Port Hope and will make its way down the main street (Ridout/Walton), Port Hope to Peter Street (maps will be provided onsite). The Caravan will continue on to the second pick -up in Cobourg at the Northumberland Mall parking lot area by Staples. Next the Northumberland Labour Day caravan will continue on driving through to the main street (King Street) in Cobourg, turning left at the intersection of King and Division Streets, going north on Division, to Elgin. At the intersection of Division and Elgin streets, the caravan will make another left going west on Elgin passing by the mall, continuing west on Highway two and ending at the parking lot by Food Basics, Port Hope. For those who may be interested and have sidewalk chalk available, please feel free to write any messages you would like our MPP or the general public to read on the sidewalks by either Food Basics and/or the office of David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland -Peterborough South. (Northumberland Labour Day Caravan Maps can also be found on the Northumberland Labour Council and CURC South Central Chapter Facebook pages) To start We will start queueing cars up in the Home Hardware parking lot area in Port Hope at 12:30 PM with a departure time from Port Hope at 1 PM. The departure time from the Northumberland Mall, Cobourg should be about 1:30 PM. While it is not required, it would be great to have most people start at Home Hardware Parking lot area in Port Hope We should be able to complete the entire route in about 45-60 minutes. WE WILL NOT be able to keep a perfect, unbroken, line for the entire route. It's okay! Have fun with the group you're in. Blast your horns and play music. Let a big chunk of Northumberland West know we're bringing a Labour Day "parade" to them this year! If you are going to decorate your cars, just please respect the fact that other traffic may be around you, while driving, so things sticking too far out of windows or the trunk may be unsafe. Please feel free also to decorate your vehicles with window chalk. Some of us will have written messages on our vehicles using window chalk. If you are interested in writing a message on your vehicle and you are looking for a message, please feel free contact Linda MacKenzie-Nicholas at [email protected]. There will likely be some window chalk available at both pick up points too. PART 2 Kids and Youth Art for 17 and under ‘What does Labour Day mean to you? The Northumberland Labour Council would like to invite all Northumberland youth to develop an artistic piece on the subject of what Labour Day means to the artist. This artwork can be either sidewalk art or poster art. The first 50 participants who have a photo of their art submitted to Northumberland Labour Council at [email protected] by Labour day, September 7, 2020 at 6 PM will each receive 20 dollars. Name, address and telephone numbers must also be provided along with the submission of the photo of the completed art work. Some selected artwork will be shared on social media. By participating and sending your artwork into the Labour Council, you are agreeing to the showing of your special work. Again name, address and telephone info must be provided so that money can be sent. If your submission is late then you will be informed.

Dropped letters off to MP Philip Lawrence, and MPP David Piccini regarding municipal funding. Municipal Governments are facing financial crisis with unexpected ...costs due to COVID-19. Northumberland Labour Council is urging both Provincial and Federal Governments to step with funds. If not programs and services that we rely on will either be reduced, or cut. Here are the copies of the letters. See more
