Are you feeling stressed lately? Meditation through Mindfulness techniques can help de-stress and relax the body. This technique has been adopted as a universal approach to increase ones: self-observation, self-awareness, learning, attention, relaxation, and brain strength. Here are some techniques to try while at work or at home! ... 1. Meditate. Taking even just 5 minutes to sit quietly and follow your breath can help you feel more conscious and connected for the rest of your day. 2. Focus On One Thing At A Time. Studies have found that tasks take 50% longer with 50% more errors when multi-tasking, so consider uni-tasking, with breaks in between, whenever possible. 3. Slow Down. Savor the process, whether it’s writing a report, drinking a cup of tea, or cleaning out closets. Deliberate and thoughtful attention to daily actions promotes healthy focus and can keep you from feeling overwhelmed. 4. Eat Mindfully. Eating your meal without the TV, computer or paper in front of you, where you can truly taste and enjoy what you’re eating, is good, not only for your body, but for your soul as well. 5. Keep Phone and Computer Time In Check. With all of the media at our fingertips, we can easily be on information overload. Set boundaries for screen time with designated times for social networking (even set an alarm) and do your best to keep mobile devices out of reach at bedtime. 6. Move. Whether it’s walking, practicing yoga, or just stretching at your desk, become aware of your body’s sensations by moving. 7. Spend Time In Nature. Take walks through a park, the woods, mountain trails or by the beach wherever you can be outside. Getting outdoors is good for body, mind and spirit, and keeps you in the present. Mindfulness meditation techniques can be short, but the whole purpose is to bring your attention back to the present moment. Play around with your work and home environment to see where mindfulness meditation can be incorporated into your daily routine!

Social media can be a great tool to share life events, a way to connect with family and friends, and a way to keep up with the news. However, it’s important to practice healthy social media habits and take breaks if social media is having a negative impact in your life. Here are some healthy social media tips to try: AVOID STARTING AND ENDING YOUR DAY WITH SOCIAL MEDIA... Try a quick refreshing yoga routine first thing in the morning to wake you up and a calming routine before bed. You may also try reading a couple of chapters of your favourite book to relax you at the end of your day. The blue light from our cellphones, tablets or laptops may interrupt your wake/sleep cycle. On many devices you can dim the screen lighting or set it to night shift - give this a try if you are using your device in the evening. TURN YOUR PHONE ON SILENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY If possible, this may prevent disruptions from text messages, e-mails, or notifications from social media. TURN YOUR NOTIFICATIONS OFF This way you’re not consistently being distracted with notifications and inclined to check your phone more often. TRACK YOUR SCREEN TIME ON YOUR PHONE Most smartphones now monitor the amount of time you are spending on your phone and will even break down your screen time into categories - social media, creativity, productivity, etc. Challenge yourself to lower your screen time from the previous day or week. SET YOUR PHONE TO DO NOT DISTURB AT NIGHT This may help avoid interruptions while you sleep. This will prevent your phone from lighting up in the middle of the night which can disturb your sleep. DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ONLINE It can be easy to compare ourselves to others. Not everything is as it seems. We never know what is going on behind the screen, photo or posts. TAKE TIME AWAY FROM SOCIAL MEDIA WHEN NEEDED If you need to take time away from social media, try removing the apps for a detox period. You do not have to delete all of your social media accounts, but simply removing the apps from your phone can limit the distraction or negative feelings they may be creating. BE YOURSELF Try not to focus on other people’s judgements because there is only one you and you deserve to be true to yourself. If you like it, share it! FOLLOW POSITIVE ACCOUNTS Follow accounts that make you happy and bring positive messaging to your day. Delete or unfollow any accounts that cause you emotional distress or negative feelings. BE POSITIVE Share positive quotes or things that make you happy, smile, and laugh. If a post is uplifting your mood, chances are it can do the same for someone that follows your account. SKIP SOCIAL MEDIA Rather than going online or sending a message, try calling family, friends or coworkers. Use that time to have a more meaningful interaction and connect with them.
