A university campus is a diverse place, with a wide range of academic, extracurricular, and social opportunities available to students. So, post-secondary schools want to ensure they have a diverse and qualified group of students filling their seats who are ready to participate in and engage with campus life. The hyphen is used to connect words or parts of words. A compound word is a group of words that together mean something different than any of the words do individually. So, a right-of-way (the right to travel over a piece of land) is different from right or way; it becomes a new word. Many compounds use hyphens: some words always take them (mother-in-law and merry-go-round and twenty-two, for instance) while others take them depending on context. Not only will this help you get familiar with the types of questions you’ll see, but you’ll also be able to get a better understanding of your timing.
