With the current COVID-19 situation, we are spending more time indoors on our digital devices. Our eyes work extra hard on digital devices and we tend to blink significantly less. Take time to blink! We recommend the 20-20-20 RULE: EVERY 20 MINUTES TAKE A 20 SECOND BREAK... LOOK 20 FEET AWAY This will help to reduce digital eye strain and dry eye secondary to reduced blinking. Here is an easy recipe from the @ontariooptometrists for Eye Healthy Pumpkin Hummus By Dr. Sarah Oh Ingredients - Two 15-oz cans of chickpeas - 1 cup pumpkin puree - Juice of 1 lemon - cup tahini - cup olive oil - 2-3 cloves garlic (more if you like it extra garlicky) - 1 tsp salt - 1 tsp cumin - 1 tsp paprika - Optional - tsp cayenne pepper Directions 1. Blend chickpeas with lemon, garlic, tahini, and olive oil in a food processor. 2. Add all other ingredients and blend until smooth. 3. If the mixture is too thick, add water 1 tbsp at a time until desired consistency is achieved. 4. When using your screens give your eyes a break. Use the 20-20-20rule. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. #glaucoma is a group of eye diseases which lead to progressive degeneration of the optic nerve. This can lead to loss of nerve tissue that results in gradual irreversible vision loss and potential blindness if not detected and treated early. The most common form of glaucoma is primary open angle glaucoma. This form is associated with elevated pressure caused by a backup of fluid in the eye.
