What's that expression....."Better late than never?" Well, that's me this year. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Omgosh, it's embarrassing even writing that on January 18th, but it's taken me until now to get a handle on things. Somebody, please tell me you can relate!!! . I always like to start the new year feeling rejuvenated from the holidays with a bright, fresh outlook for the new year, but this year has been a little out of the ordinary to say the least. While these first couple ...of weeks haven't panned out the way I had planned, they have been as good as could be expected during a lockdown in a pandemic. If homeschooling is the worst of my issues, I guess I have it pretty good. :) . That said, winter is tough for me. I don't like the cold and therefore definitely don't get outside enough. I miss the sunshine, fresh air and definitely the good 'ol days of hangin' with drinks and friends around a campfire. This little cottage that our family re-built over the last year has been such a blessing. It's amazing how getting out the house and in and around nature can help the psyche. We've only had the opportunity to use it a few weekends over the last couple of months, but when we do I instantly feel less stressed and more relaxed. It's all in the details. When I'm decorating a space, I look at the room as a whole to see where there are opportunities to create function and add beauty. I also look to see how I can make connections throughout a design so that it flows and feels cohesive. Sometimes it doesn't happen right away and I need to improvise because of an item's scale, the budget provided or the availability of a product. . In this case, the client was me. :) My office has needed a makeov...er FOR-EVER! It became the dumping ground for staging supplies, business and personal documents, product samples and a hideaway for gifts. It was bursting at the seams! The problem was, that I didn't have a ton of money to invest in improving it so I had to get creative. I bought a cabinet that works perfectly for my samples, a cute planter and two art prints from @homesensecanada and painted out the frames. I bought some beads and design books second-hand (which I can't wait to read) from a fellow designer @patriciagalbraithinteriors and a beautiful vintage bowl from @lemontreeinteriors. Pretty thrifty eh? I love how it turned out. . What about you? It all starts with a blank canvas! Taking on a new design project can feel so daunting. Wondering whether you're going in the right direction, having a creative block, lots of Ctrl+z's, pulling your hair, wishing you could throw your computer flat at a wall, taking a de-stress nap, and then finally seeing the work with fresh eyes and nailing the project after a couple of such rounds. Running your own business (especially when you have young children) can be challenging. When I started my virtual interior design business, I felt so overwhelmed all the time. I felt like I wouldn't be able to make it because of how much I had to balance. There were so many times where I thought of just giving up and finding a regular job. But I'm so glad that I pushed through that and didn't let myself lose an opportunity to build something myself. Working for yourself, ...setting your own rules, being in charge of your own work is so empowering. And it's more empowering knowing I'm able to balance my work and my family life! It has been a busy, busy couple of months. Work, children, homework, cooking, work, cleaning, work, our cottage renovation, and the list goes on! Plus COVID. We all have that one point every year where theres just so much to do and so little time to get it all done. I guess its my time of the year.... . But jokes aside, given the circumstances, Im very grateful to have this busy phase. Ill take busy over bored any day and during this uncertain time work is even mo...re of a blessing. All that said, Ive been feeling like Im starting to fizzle. So, this weekend I spent some much needed time on the beach with some girls from high school. It felt SO GOOD to reminisce and have vulnerable conversations with people I trust, whove known me forever and love me no matter what. Girl time combined with beach time is like fuel for my soul. I feel SO MUCH better. Im already yearning for the next getaway. Thank you to my girls for an amazing time away. I love yall so much! What fuels your soul? Love this quote and needed this reminder from @timberhawkeye. When covid first became a concern in my area I was high on life. Id just gotten back from @mrsrachelhollis s RISE event in Toronto and I was all geared up to live an amazing life. The very next day they announced that kids would not be going back to school after March Break. I wasnt phased at all. I was sure everything would be fine and we would "handle" things. My high lasted a few weeks and then I start...ed to see businesses go under, friends suffer and my kids lose their vibrant personalities. I was DETERMINED not to let my business and my family collapse. I had "control" of everything. But as time went on, more and more became out of my control and the more control I lost the more anxiety I felt. It was consuming me and I was exhausted. I was so torn between trying to keep the business I worked SO HARD to build alive and being my kids mama, teacher and friend. I couldnt do it all "well." I wanted to, but I couldnt. I cried to my husband saying, "maybe this wasnt meant to be. Maybe, I wasnt meant to have an interior design biz. Maybe this was the universe telling me to focus more on my family. " There were So.Many.Maybes. . I "decided" to let go of control. I decided to surrender my reigns on everything and just do what felt right and natural in each moment. I was less productive, but I felt better. I let go of blogging, e-newsletters and posting on social media as much and I focused on the absolutely necessary tasks in my business so that I could spend the time I would spend writing and posting on being present with my kids. I wont lie, it still bothers me that Ive let those tasks slide, but Id rather do that then let my family suffer. . Timbers quote resonated with me because over the past few months of dealing with a pandemic, Ive realized just how many things are out of my control and how futile it is to try to retain order in an unprecedented situation. So now I "choose" to calm myself by lowering the expectations I have of myself..... until this storm passes. I hope if youve been feeling in a similar way, that youll lower your expectations too. Hey yall! Do you have a chair in your home that you call "your" chair? For me, its our blue swivel chairs from @smittysfinefurniture. These chairs are SOOoooooo comfortable. Everyone who sits on them is always amazed at how comfortable they are. Our whole family loves them. I actually get personal satisfaction from the praise we receive regarding these chairs - I know thats weird...dont judge me. :) But, Im actually thinking "ya, I chose these chairs. I have great ...taste. Im a master at selecting comfy chairs." Well okay, I dont think that every time, but it definitely has come to mind more than once. Just being honest. :) . What about you? Colour theory is such an important part of interior decorating. It plays a vital role in helping to create the "feeling" you want to have in your home. While interior design largely about making your space function well and look beautiful, I would argue that how it "feels" to you is the most important part. . When selecting a colour scheme for your home, its important to dig deep into how you want to feel in the space. If youre the type of person that likes to come home... at the end of the day to relax and decompress, then choosing a colour scheme that includes muted blues and greens will help to achieve that. Comparatively, if youre a person who loves to host regular dinner parties with lots of laughter and lively conversation then a warmer colour palette may suit you better. The point is to figure out how you want your home to feel and then research - or hire a professional like me ;) to help you determine the right colour scheme for your home. Last week I was out countertop shopping for our cottage. I want a beautiful quartz countertop so badly, but weve already gone so far over budget that we cant justify the cost right now. It was really tough making the decision to go with laminate, but we have other priorities right now. While we would definitely see a return on our investment if we chose marble, granite or quartz, we arent going to be selling for a really long time so we decided laminate is good enough for now and in a few years time when its worn out or more feasible, well replace it with a higher quality product. Hey yall. Its been awhile since Ive posted. If Im being honest, Ive been feeling pretty overwhelmed. The situation that were all in right now has me down. . Its so challenging trying to work throughout the day having kids home vying for your attention. Dont get me wrong, I love my kids and I know I have it pretty good, but that doesnt change the fact that its a struggle. I cant even imagine going through life as a single parent or a person of colour right now. I k...now I have privileges. I know my privileges make my life easier but my emotions get the better of me sometimes. . The truth is I havent posted in awhile because Ive been overwhelmed with thoughts and emotions and not knowing the right thing to say. So heres me posting. Not in any kind of order and probably not the right things to say, but its real. . I love working. I mean I LOVE working..... its my job and my hobby. I know not many people get to say that. I am blessed. I love my kids SO much but I was not designed to be home with them 24/7. I know Im blessed to have kids while others struggle for them - Im trying to get better at being more patient and living in the moment. I struggle with self-worth and confidence and during these trying times Im feeling less worthy and less confident than ever because Im not measuring up to the standards I hold for myself. Not only that, but Im ready for the change that this world is about to see and I want to be part of the movement, but Im feeling inadequate. I want to learn more and help more, but the truth is I dont feel I can take on anything more right now. . Earlier this week a mentor of mine told me to give myself some grace. So thats what Im doing. Im telling myself what I would tell a friend who is struggling. Its okay to step back. Take a breath. Its okay to feel sad, overwhelmed, angry, whatever feeling youre feeling.....Just dont get stuck in it. Take a moment to reset and when youre feeling better, get back at it! Please dont take my silence as disinterest. Im just finding my way. Whoo hoo! Its National Wine Day...I guess Ill be having a glass or two tonight.....not that I needed a reason. :) I truly love wine. Aside from water, its my favourite drink. Im not a connoisseur by any means, but I know what I love and dont. . When it comes to white wines, I love riesling, sauvignon blanc and some pinot grigios. For red wines, I love cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot. And in the summer on a super hot day, I love a moscato packed with ice to dilut...e the sugar a bit and keep it cool. My favourite regions for wine seem to be hot and sunny. I love pretty much anything from California, Chile, Australia and South Africa. Oh and on that note, its Africa day today too so yep. DESIGN TIP - Ive been working on virtual paint consults like crazy these days. I guess with Spring in the air, so many people are ready to freshen up their space or move to a new one. Heres a paint palette I put together for a home with a white kitchen and a blue island. The rest of the home is done in multiple tones of greige to provide a neutral backdrop for the homeowners to work with, as well as timeless appeal. . TIP - If you love variety in your home but you also l...ove the practicality a neutral background offers, use multiple tones in the same colour family to bring diversity to your space. Varying the depth of a colour will keep your home feeling cohesive, while adding a bit of interest. . Oh to have this gorgeous bathroom designed by @cheliushouseofdesign. It feels like a little escape away from home. And oh how I wish to escape. Is anyone else starting to feel the isolation of social distancing? Dont get me wrong, I completely feel that its necessary but I miss leaving the house to do something other than going for a walk around the block.
