The following is a post from OMH President Rick Stevens in reaction to Councillor Todd Taylor's recent Facebook post. The aim is to provide clarity and pellucidity on the topic of our recent request to The Town of Orangeville regarding ice costs: I would like to thank everyone for commenting on this very important issue that Councillor Taylor asked for comments on. Unfortunately, all of the information wasn't provided by Councillor Taylor. Skate Canada Orangeville, Tigers Hoc...key (girls hockey) and Orangeville Minor Hockey (boys hockey) went to Town Council in January and asked for a reduced hourly rate for the remainder of the season. This reduced rate isn't being paid for by the taxpayers of Orangeville, it just wouldn't bring in as much revenue as it would have if all three groups paid the full amount. We aren't asking Town Council to pay for our programs, we are asking them to assist us with a fee reduction. People are commenting, what happened to the registration fees that we collected, the short answer is we set our fee structure in April for the following season and no one expected the pandemic to last this long. Our registration fees remained the same, our ice time cost however rose to cover the extra teams we had to have to limit the 10 players on the ice compared to our 15 or 17 on a team in a normal year. Our ice time fees per player almost doubled and we asked the question to Council. At no point were we asking a taxpayer to pay for any children to play hockey or to learn to skate through Skate Canada. Our goal was to ask for the reduced rate to maintain our season and have our programs continue. This is no different than the Town offering the reduced rate before Christmas time to the residents (which they did). Halton Hills offered the reduced rate (50%) to their Minor Sport groups so they could continue their programs. At the end of the day, it's very simple; two choices for Council to decide on... 1, no reduction in fees, close the arenas, lay off their full time staff and turn off the ice making machines or 2, reduce the ice costs, assist the youth programs, pay their full time staff and take in revenue to pay for those costs. Again, thank you, and if anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me. Rick Stevens, President, Orangeville Minor Hockey. (519)278-0927 See more

No formal decision has been made on what zone we will be in at this time. When a decision is made by public health and The Province of Ontario, we will confer with The Town of Orangeville's Parks & Rec Department and communicate that with our community as soon as we can.
