G60 swam past the Nimpkish River on December 4th. I hate to think about his disappointment when he found no chum salmon. He likely traveled a long way to get he...re. How hungry is he in this picture? His family have been coming to this area, at this time of year, since I started keeping records in 1984, probably for a long, long time before that. The G-clan northern residents and the Alert Bay seine fleet used to fish the tens of thousands of chums that used to return to the Meetup (Viner) River as well. Chum salmon are one of the worst impacted by farm lice because they embark on their ocean phase with no scales and so the lice breeding in Atlantic salmon farms from Broughton to Port Hardy have killed untold millions of this species. They are vanishing wherever Atlantic salmon are raised - Broughton, Nootka, Mainland Inlets off the Discovery Islands and the Nimpkish. If I could talk to this whale I would tell him that here in 'Namgis territory, the Nations have his back and to check back in a few years. Most of the Broughton nations are working to rid this area of salmon farms through agreements with government and in the courts and have successfully gotten rid of 5 farms already. I hope this whale and his family can find food elsewhere in the meantime. See more
