Orca's Pod 01.07.2021

Orca’s Pod is excited to ring in the new year with a new location at #113-721 Winn Rd in Lower Gibsons, behind the post office across from the museum. No more stairs! But we still have mushroom products, graphic novels, books, local music, art and funky crafts. Our ambition with this new space is to begin production of our own books, graphic novels, zines, chapbooks and other small press products. Feel free to come say hi and browse between 10am and 4pm Monday thru Friday. #gibsonsbc #localbusiness #sunshinecoastbc #sunshinecoastartist

Join Jody on Nardwuar The Human Serviette Presents... on CITR 101.9 FM in Vancouver this afternoon at 3:30 as he tells the tale of Canadian Relics, an ill-fated CanCon music artefact lost in the tides of culture, on the 25th anniversary of its release. Or pop into Orca's Pod sometime, listen to the music & get the story in person! Copies of this rare record are also for sale!

TRANQUILITY BREAK About 10 days ago I showed you SUMMERTIME DREAM, the image of the balloons over Mount Baker. Lyall Nanson and I did that together. Today’s... Tranquility Break is yet another piece we did together. In 1990 the tv show The Beachcombers ended after 19 years. The Town of Gibsons asked Lyall Nanson and me if we’d do a commemorative gift from the Town to CBC and the Beachcombers. Together we produced this limited-edition silk screen print that was presented to the CBC, the cast and some of the crew. This image of that piece isn’t the best as it’s a picture of a print. The original painting has long since sold, so it was unavailable for digitization. I show you this today though because it’s 20 years since The Beachcombers left Gibsons. But, a local art gallery ORCA’S POD, in lower Gibsons, is presenting fielding a show called BEACHCOMBER REIMAGINED. A framed copy of the print is hanging in that show. There you go folks. Just mentioning that famous show will take a lot of you back. Tranquility Break already did its job. It diverted your attention for just a minute or two from you know what. The story below, is what was written at the time, all those 20 years ago. BEACHCOMBER FAREWELL GIBSONS that’s where they film the Beachcombers, isn’t it? Who hasn’t heard those words before, perhaps even taken them for granted? No community could dream of any better public relations or media campaign to promote their own. Beachcombers has become an institution in Gibsons. Since 1971 the crews and actors have become part of us. In many cases they don’t just work here, they live here. They are as constant as the seasons. Spring in Gibsons is when the hummingbirds return, the trees bud, and the snow melts in the mountains. All of those may vary by weeks or even months. The sure sign of spring for us however, is the return of the Beachcomber crew. We can count on them! So too the fall; as sure as the blackberries will ripen and the day will grow shorter, so too the Beachcombers will leave. They have become something we see but don’t always notice. Unlike those other, more natural, seasonal signs however, Beachcombers will not return in the Spring of 1991. After 19 years, we are losing something that has become natural to us and it is with a sense of sadness and regret that we must say thank-you and good-bye. In the painting Beachcomber Farewell artists Ed Hill and Lyall Nanson have produced an image that depicts the Beachcombers as a part of our environment. It depicts those images in such fashion as to show that, though gone, The Beachcombers will never be forgotten. We have enjoyed sharing our community with you and we’ll miss you when you’re gone. Thank you for the experience and from all of us in the coastal community that much of the world has come to know because of you, we bid you Beachcomber Farewell.
