May 5th is the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), also known as Red Dress Day. Our hearts are with the families and communities whose loved ones never return home. This day began in 2010, as an aesthetic response to more than 1000 missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada by Jaime Black (Métis). In times of social distancing and isolation due to dual health crises it is essential to raise our voices and hearts to the ...people that have been lost. The dresses from these photographs are hanging on Bowen Island, as the community mourns and remembers our stolen sisters. #RedDressDay #MMIWG #NoMoreStolenSisters

"Emotional connection is crucial to healing. In fact, trauma experts overwhelmingly agree that the best predictor of the impact of any trauma is not the severity of the event, but whether we can seek and take comfort from others. Traumatic stress cuts to the heart of life, interfering with one’s capacity to love, create, and work. This incapacity brought on not by poor lifestyle choices, moral weakness, or character flaws but by a complex interplay among biology, genes, and environment. And though Trauma is a universal experience, generally speaking, it is an uncommon part of people’s daily conversation. Thankfully, and appropriately, trauma-informed practice is becoming an increasingly common topic."

Sponsored and decorated by families, community groups and businesses, the Festival's Christmas trees on beautiful Dundarave Beach have raised over a third of a million dollars since 2008 for the Lookout Society's North Shore Shelter. End homelessness beautifully: Donate to the Lookout Foundation. Lookout will use the proceeds to support housing for members of our community exiting homelessness. https://my.charitableimpact.com//dundarave-festival-s-fore... @ Dundarave Festival of Lights

Use today to reach out to someone who remembers a time when people were hiding in their homes for different reasons, as we remember those whose great sacrifices brought peace to so many around the world during those troubled times. The elder that you reach out to today may be having to isolate, and will likely be grateful you called. "Today, we may be locked inside, but we have contact with our children and grandchildren through the phone and internet, says Berthe Badehi,... who hid from the Nazis as a child during World War II, has become one of the many Holocaust survivors confined in their homes to evade the coronavirus. Beyond cancellation of educational events, COVID-19 has posed a particularly grave threat to Holocaust survivors, given their age. The virus "is absolutely attacking the memory of the Holocaust because it is attacking the elderly," Smith said, adding that he is aware of several survivors who have died from coronavirus-related complications. "It is also attacking our ability to (collect) these stories," he said. - https://bit.ly/36ploa5

Studies across the globe have been consistently showing alcohol use in adults has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and treating substance addiction has been declared an essential service in BC. With our reduced capacity and private facilities, the Orchard is here to help you and your family heal. Our physically distanced measures ensure Orchard clients can start their recovery journey in a safe environment with small group settings. Call, text, or email our Intake Team to ask about our admissions and protocols. https://orchardrecovery.com/covid-19/

As our first unofficial #RecoveryMonth draws to a close, we wanted to say thank you to our industry colleagues who worked tirelessly to shift this year’s activities online. 2020 has been a struggle for everyone around the world, and our community has been fighting two pandemics at once. While we can’t know what safety measures next year will hold, we are already thinking about how to push the envelope forward to make September 2021 nationally recognized as Recovery Month. W...e will keep you posted about how you can support the #M40Movement to ask the Federal Government to recognize Recovery Month officially. Follow Recovery Month Canada for the latest news on getting this motion passed! #RecoveryMonthCanada #OneDayAtATime #ItWorksIfYouWorkIt

Sharing these photos from a #BowenIsland #MomsStopTheHarm member, who collected shoes as part of the display on the #BurrardBridge for #InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDay. This #August31st hits especially hard, as overdose deaths in BC have drastically spiked in recent months due to the current pandemic and the social isolation that has come along with it. Tonight, Vancouver City Hall, Science World, and BC Place will light up purple. There will be an online candlelight vigil at 7pm PST (see poster) with live music and guest speakers such as #BonnieHenry. Tune into https://www.facebook.com/MomsStopTheHarm/ to watch. MomsStopTheHarm will be donating the shoes to those in need after they are taken off the bridge.
