The Doors to Wit’s End Pastor Ray Wilson , Orchard View Baptist Church Have you been at your Wits End? You know that place where you are at the end of your rop...e between a rock and a hard place and you have no clue what to do? The Psalmist David writes about this place in Psalm 107 where he describes the people of God as stumbling in the wilderness, sitting in the darkness, scorning in their souls, and staggering in the storm. They were at their wits End. This Psalm reveals the history of how people get themselves to that place. When you get to that place called wits end, it is a place where a solution cannot be easily reached; it is a hard place where it seems there is no way out. No logical reasoning can be found, and you are ready to throw you hands in the air in defeat as you reach the end of your rope. I believe that there are five doors that lead us to this confusing and complicated place. The first door that leads us there is the Door of Unbelief. In Luke 8:22-28, we see the disciples getting into a boat with the Lord Jesus to cross over to the other side of the lake. Jesus said, let’s go over to the other side. The interesting part of this story is this, the disciples had heard the word of the Lord, they were going to the other side and the Lord was with them. After they set out a storm arose on the lake that threatened to swamp or sink their boat. They were losing control. So, what did they do? They believed the threats of the storm that they might capsize and drown. They were looking only at their circumstance so much so that they cried out We are perishing. They had forgotten who they were with and what he had said. The Lord stood and quieted the storm and leveled this accusation at his followers. Where is your faith?. Hebrews 11:6 says, And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. When we give place to unbelief, we will walk through the door to Wits End. Another door is the Door of Sin. We see this illustrated in the life of Samson recorded in Judges 13 to 16. Samson was known as the strongest of O.T. Judges. This passage of scripture records Samson’s trek down the shameful road of sin. The high cost of low living brought Samson to humiliating place where he was blind and bound, a captive doing the lowly work of a beast in grinding out grain. Sin will grind out the best out of your life. Samson had forsaken the ways of his God and walked in the desires of his flesh. The Word of God warns that your sin will find you out and that the pleasures of sin only last for a season. (Numbers 32:23; Hebrews 11:25) Samson learned this the hard way. The Door of Disobedience is another sure way to find yourself at Wits End. Saul was the first king of Israel. He was a good looking and popular with the people. But his life was marked by disobedience and disdain for the things of God. You may find acclamation and acceptance with your mates but remember Saul, because we read in 1 Samuel 15:23, Because you have rejected the Word of the Lord. God has also rejected you from being King. Saul ultimately paid for his disobedience with the loss of his life and his reign. How about the Door of Fear? The prophet Elijah went through this door. We read his story in 1 Kings 19. Elijah had won the battle over the 400 prophets of Baal. Yet, we read he was afraid of Jezebel the queen. We see from his story that he went down, he sat down, he laid down in a cave and despaired of his life. He forgot about the power and strength that God had provided and looked at the threats of an evil woman. Surely, he was at Wits End. Perhaps you have been to the Door of Doubt. We see this displayed in the life of Mary Magdalene at the open door of the empty tomb. We see her weeping and broken hearted, so overcome with her grief that she did not even recognize the Lord as he stood before her. She was at her wits end as she sobbed They have taken my Lord away. I don’t know where they have put him. She doubted the Lord’s resurrection even when the Lord had declared that He was the Resurrection and the Life. If we go back to Psalm 107, we see the answer to going through the doors of Unbelief, Sin, Disobedience, Fear and Doubt. The answer is in Supplication for they cried out to the Lord in their trouble and he delivered them from their distress. This phrase is reiterated several times. Why do we wait until we get to our wits end, when we have done everything we can think of, have we prayed and turned to our God for direction and deliverance? Remember Jeremiah 33:3 tells us Call on me and I will answer and show you great and mighty things you do not know, Will we rely on the Revelation of God’s Word to guide us; will we accept the teaching and leading of God’s Holy Spirit; will we trust the power and love of our God to see us through? It is as we go through these doors of Supplication, Revelation, Education and Expectation that we will find God’s best for our lives. Proverbs 3:5,6 says this Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.
