The only radio broadcaster to be on air with seven Canadian Prime Ministers, Jack Dennett was an institution in Canadian radio. Broadcasting the news on CFRB for 26 years, Dennett had more listeners than any other newscaster in Canada. For 30 years, Dennett was associated with NHL broadcasts, and during this time joined CBC’s televised hockey coverage on Hockey Night in Canada. The impact of his broadcasting talent was felt beyond sport as teachers would request transcripts ...of Dennett’s broadcasts as examples for their students demonstrating clear, concise English. His broadcasts were also known for clarity, wit, and compassion for the average man. A testament to his incredible recall for Canada’s athletic history, Dennett served as the Chairman of the Hall of Famer Selection Committee (previously known as the Honoured Member Selection Committee) of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame from 1968-1975. Bringing the long and storied history of the Montreal Canadiens to the homes of many Québécois, is only a part of René Lecavalier’s story. Lecavalier joined CBC’s French Radio Division in 1937, as a war correspondent based in North Africa. From 1952-1986 he provided French play-by-play for the Montreal Canadiens. Throughout this time, he provided Olympic coverage in for the 1960, 1964, 1968, 1976, and 1984 Olympics. Throughout his broadcasting career, Lecavalier also provided... coverage of numerous Commonwealth and Pan-American Games. He provided the French coverage for the iconic 1972 Summit Series, similar to Foster Hewitt’s famous line for the English speaking public, Lecavalier made history with the phrase "Cournoyer qui s'avance. Oh, Henderson a perdu la passe! Il a fait une chute. Et devant le but. ET LE BUT DE HENDERSON! Avec 34 secondes encore!". Rather than adopting English words, Lecavalier established a French hockey vernacular such as "il lance et compte!" in replacement of He Shoots! He Scores!. In 1970, Lecavalier was honoured with the Order of Canada, later receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award among many others. He Shoots! He Scores! a phrase any ice hockey fan is familiar with - a phrase that was coined by Hall of Famer, Foster Hewitt. Making broadcasting history twice in his career - in 1923 when he called the first ever hockey game radio broadcast, and again on April 10th, 1951 when he was a part of the very first televised ice hockey broadcast, Hewitt was a trailblazer for hockey coverage. With new technology and new audiences came new difficulties, one of which prompted Hewit...t to become a pioneer of the ice hockey gondola, the broadcasting booth placed high above the rink providing crucial vantage points for those covering the game. Hewitt became a staple in Canadian ice hockey, calling every Saturday night game for 20 years. He switched all his attention to his radio station CKFH in 1963, which has now become Toronto’s The FAN 590. Hewitt returned to ice hockey broadcasting once, to call the famous 1972 Summit Series, concluding his career with the famous line, Henderson has scored for Canada!. Because of his contributions to the game, the Hockey Hall of Fame named the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award after him, and the Scotiabank Arena named their media gondola the Foster Hewitt Gondola. Danny covered nearly 2,000 ice hockey games throughout his career and upon his retirement, he became a goodwill ambassador for Hockey Night in Canada serving as a campaign spokesman for multiple scleros...is in the Atlantic Area. Suffering multiple major concussions throughout his impressive ice hockey career, which included the 1972 Summit Series, Ron Ellis was later diagnosed with clinical depression. Ellis himself and his doctors believe that the effects of these major concussions, could have been compounding factors for his depressive symptoms. Playing hockey at a time where they did not wear helmets, and no proper concussion protocols were in place, Ellis began to speak openly about the importanc...e of these protocols. He also dedicated much of his post-hockey life to combatting the stigma surrounding men and their brain/mental health. A few examples of his work include lending his name to benefit the Ron Ellis Pond Hockey Tournament which raised money for Stopconcussions becoming a co-founding honouree of the Hull-Ellis concussion and research clinic in Toronto, and advocating for the research of long term effects of concussions on mental health.
