Orenda Cancer Community: Reconnect 15.02.2021

THROWBACK BLOG POST Medicinal mushrooms have been growing in popularity, with brands like Four Sigmatic and other mushroom coffees and tonics becoming very mainstream. The little fungi can pack a powerful punch in areas like mental clarity and energy, which is why they have become so popular. But that's far from all they do! Last year, I wrote a whole series on the five medicinal mushrooms most potent against cancer. In each post I explore a new mushroom, discussing its histo...ry and origin, traditional uses, and of course its effects in the context of immunity and cancer. Below is the first in the series, and focuses on coriolus mushrooms, or as they are more commonly known, turkey tail mushrooms. Check it out, and then search "medicinal mushrooms" using the search bar on the right or by going to "Supplements and Natural Compounds" in the blog drop down menu if you would like to learn about the other mushrooms in the series: reishi, maitake, shiitake, and chaga. You will be amazed at the power of these friendly fungi! When I posted a dumpling recipe a few weeks ago, someone over in the Orenda Facebook group asked what my other favourite go-to recipes were, and it made me realise that I have yet to share most of my absolute favourite, I-have-to-have-them-every-week recipes! So today, I am correcting that. These paleo salmon cakes with homemade green goddess sauce are grain and dairy free, and they are full of healthy fats in both the cakes and the sauce. These also use parsley or cilantro (...or both if you wanna get wild!), both of which are amazing natural chelators and help to pull out heavy metals and toxins from your body to aid in detoxing. AND they contain two of the heaviest hitters in the world of anticancer vegetables, onions and garlic. In short, these little cakes are big on flavour and are also good for you! How often does that happen?? They are a little labour intensive, but trust me, it’s a labour of love. I hope you like them just as much as we do. NEW VLOG Hello, and Happy Mental Health Monday! Today, we're continuing with my series on dealing with the day to day fear of a cancer recurrence. In this vlog, I share the next few tips and tools on my list, and I talk about how I use them and how they have helped and continue to help me.... Like I said last week, the day to day fear of a cancer recurrence (or even of a first time occurrence like I experienced before I was ever diagnosed) is one of the most difficult challenges we face after active treatment is over, and having some tips and tools to get us through those toughest days can be so helpful. I hope that they bring you comfort, strength, and empowerment. It may be invisible, but cancer PTSD is real, and you are absolutely not alone in it. NEW VLOG The months after diagnosis are some of the hardest and scariest that anyone will go through in their life. But with treatments happening regularly, we have so much to focus on and to have faith and confidence in. When those treatments end, everyone expects us to be ecstatic and ready to get back to normal, and it can be very hard for them and for us to understand why that doesn’t often happen. A cancer diagnosis changes everything, and there is no going back to th...e way things were before. We are forever changed, and PTSD can affect us long after the physical effects of cancer have subsided or stabilised. In trying to settle into a new normal, dealing with the fear and anxiety caused by that PTSD and our experience with cancer can be debilitating and very difficult to deal with, especially when our loved ones have a hard time understanding it. The day to day fear of a cancer recurrence (or even of a first time occurrence like I experienced before I was ever diagnosed) is one of the many challenges faced after treatment is over, and so I am dedicating the next few MHM’s to discussing my own experience with this and giving you a long list of the tips and tools I use to help me through those days where I just want to stay in bed and pretend the world isn’t there and cancer never happened. I hope that they bring you comfort, strength, and empowerment. At the very least, I hope hearing from me about my experience with this helps you to feel validated in your emotions. It may be invisible, but cancer PTSD is real, and you are absolutely not alone in it. THROWBACK BLOG POST This week, it’s all about one of my favourite alternative therapies that has been a part of my protocol from the beginning: mistletoe! That's right, christmassy-kiss-me-under-it mistletoe can be used in your fight against cancer. I love this one for lots of reasons, but one is that it is relatively easy to do yourself at home. With a little bit of input from a naturopath on the dosing and who can order it for you, you can give yourself the injections at ho...me. If you haven't injected yourself before, I know how scary it seems at the beginning, but trust me, you absolutely get used to it. You've got this! Check out my blog post below for lots of information on how mistletoe works against cancer and supports your immune system. And if you would like to hear me talk about my experience with mistletoe injections and see what it looks like (the mistletoe, not the injection itself because that freaks some people out!), then check out this video from a past post in the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com//orend/permalink/2263761507286764 And if you have any questions AT ALL about mistletoe and my experience with it, please feel free to pop a comment below or send me a PM.
