Did you know one blueberry plant can be 25 feet across? There are about 200 varieties of wild blueberries and they can be quite different. Because we rake, it is possible you can get a 5 lb box from us that contain mostly berries from one clone. So, as you can see in the photo (Thank you Heather!) we have some clones with pink berries. They taste sweet and almost citrusy. Then there are the deep purple that taste like blueberry with a hint of saskatoons. We can taste our way across the field! Then of course there are the varieties of blue!
2014 was the last year we had our blueberries harvested with tractors and the large bins (holds 300 lbs of blueberries) favoured by the large farms for berries sent to Oxford. Now we do it the old way.... It is interesting that the promotions for wild blueberries one sees in ads, show someone hand raking in a lovely field of blue--while very few blueberries are still harvested that way anymore.
Well, it has been a challenging year for many reasons. As farmers, more so with the poor weather for growing. Our beautiful blueberries suffered first from the drought-which they were surviving- then hit with the extreme heat. Some of our fruit was literally cooked in the field. The rain came, but not soon enough to revive much of the crop. We have been able find pockets in the field that are good. We only fill the boxes with our best. But supply is very limited. All our boxes are already sold, so we have no more available. Thank you for your continued support and interest in our venture to grow organic wild blueberries in Nova Scotia. I know we are not the only farmers struggling to continue with weather and staffing challenges.
In these times, we have gone back to a disposable world....I just can’t wrap my head around all the paper towel we would need for handwashing, so our solution!
We recently had a visit from a weed specialist to help us identify and strategize management. At least 25 varieties of weeds. Diversity? LOL As you may know, hand weeding is our main strategy for management and he said that we are doing a pretty good job of it. Take a bow Wayne and Heather! They have been out there daily, even in this heat.
