We understand the city needs to put safety first but so is the industry, Tony Elenis, president and CEO of the Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association wrote in an email to NOW. Restaurants operate within a controlled environment, including contact tracing unlike many other sectors. This enables effective tracing on the occurrence of a case, which can occur anywhere, to stop the spread, he added. Much safer than public get-togethers at private residents. When res...taurants close, private gatherings escalate. Government relief should be planned and applied to businesses proactively during shutdowns. https://nowtoronto.com//toronto-to-extend-ban-on-indoor-di

Take-Out Booze Is Here To Stay! ORHMA is pleased to share that the ON government commits to permanently allow restaurants and bars that hold a Liquor Sales Licence to include alcohol with food as part of a takeout or delivery order before the existing regulation expires. "We applaud Ontario’s government for its commitment to make the delivery and take-out of beverage alcohol with food permanent. This is a decision that will bring tangible success to the foodservice industry...." says Tony Elenis, President & CEO of ORHMA. http://www.mri.gov.on.ca/re/rebuilding_main_street_2020.pdf

On Thursday, October 8, several new temporary by-law amendments will come into force. To prevent COVID-19 activity and outbreaks in establishments serving food and drinks, these businesses will be required to: Limit the total number of patrons permitted to be inside at any one time to 75 (down from 100) Maintain a customer log for each patron, not just one person from the party... Limit the maximum number of people able to sit at each table, both inside and outside, to six people (down from 10) Keep background music and any other background sounds, such as from televisions or other electronic sound producing devices, no louder than the volume of normal conversation (with the exception of live performances carried out in accordance with the provincial Stage 3 regulation) https://www.toronto.ca//toronto-city-council-votes-unanim/

ORHMA, along with other like-minded business associations, has joined a national coalition titled "Freeze It For Them" to fight tax increases which would raise beverage alcohol prices for Ontario’s licensee. "Freeze it for them" is supported by farming groups, bar and restaurant owners, tourism and hospitality associations, manufacturers, brewers, and industry representatives. More tax increases will set Canadian beer drinkers, bar and restaurant servers, and other industries hit hard by the COVID-19 economic crisis back even further. As several regions across the province begin to move into Stage 3 of re-opening, businesses must adhere to the Guidelines of their Local Public Health Units on re-opening. Businesses must operate in accordance with all applicable laws, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations made under it.
