See link in bio for the full article. @orilliamatters does a good job at outlining the concerns of optometrists in Ontario, and 90% of optometrists have voted in favour of withdrawing OHIP services as of Sept 1. @jilldunlopmpp is incorrect in her assumption that we will cary on providing health care that is funded well below cost past that date. The current funding model forces optometrists to subsidize the provision of health care services. The cost of providing an eye exam... is, on average in Ontario, $80, which includes overhead, rent, staff, and utilities, but does not include any income for the doctors. So, when the province only covers $45 of that cost, it is easy to see why it is simply not sustainable. The optometry office must cover the remainder of the costs to provide eye exams from the proceeds from other areas of the office. Providing health care at a considerable loss is no longer sustainable or acceptable. It is simply unreasonable. This has been an ongoing issue with successive governments over 30 years. The current government has the ability to correct those shortcomings.
