Good news, the permit to electrofish has been extended so we were able to add some more days to our electrofishing schedule. Please sign up to help our fish populations in the Oromocto River and numerous tributaries. FYI, 13 juvenile Atlantic salmon captured in 8 sites so far in 2020. Have an idea or maybe just curious about a stream or brook for next year? Let us know! https://doodle.com/poll/krkid6vh7tuqz3wz

We are excited to begin our 2020 electrofishing program in order to assess fish populations in the numerous tributaries of the Oromocto River. The temperatures have dropped significantly in many streams and we are hoping to begin sampling this Friday, August 28. We are expecting to do 18 closed sites this year, our biggest year yet! Due to COVID concerns, we will be offering gas cards to cover mileage for your vehicle to and from the study sites. For logistics of meeting plac...es, items you may need, or any questions and concerns, participants should contact: https://www.facebook.com/WillowbrookWatershed Please sign up at: https://doodle.com/poll/krkid6vh7tuqz3wz We need a minimum of 3 people to make the data comparable to ERD and DFO data and for consistency between years. Ideally we would have 4 people per site, and if there is a day where there are already 4 people but it is your only free day, please feel free to come out anyway! Kids are welcomed as well. Looking forward!

Hi Everyone, we are overdue for an update on our summer research activities and we want you to be informed of all the fantastic work we are doing in the Oromocto River catchment to help protect your environment in 2020. Currently we are collecting the third year of data relating how the diverse bedrock geology of the Oromocto River is affecting water quality through chemical and biological factors in 19 sites. We also look at the differences in water quality parameters as the... discharge of the river changes- from early summer water levels to base flow conditions, and everywhere in between. We are also following this up with benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and electrofishing in a subset of these sites to see how the instream residents are affected by these fluctuations. In addition we have been monitoring the tidal portions of the river for any potential cyanobacteria blooms (blue-green algae) and occurrences of invasive plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil. This work is primarily sponsored by the Environmental Trust Fund of New Brunswick. We also have 18 electrofishing sites to do this year in association with two different projects: 1) Atlantic salmon population assessment sponsored by the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation and 2) the aforementioned fish distribution in relation to bedrock geology project sponsored by the Wildlife Trust Fund of New Brunswick. We will be once again be seeking volunteers for electrofishing but will make a few changes to accommodate work safe rules as it relates to COVID-19. Stay tuned for more information on the electrofishing program- we are limited by temperatures for the next few weeks but will attempt to set up a doodle scheduling page soon. See more
