Isn't it amazing how Mom's always seem to know where missing items (keys, wallets, earbuds, etc.) are? It's kinda like we're magical beings, right? Would it be too much to ask my family to refer to me as "The Great And All Knowing" from time to time??

How sweet is this yard at #3 - 3014 Palmer Drive? I love all the big trees and apparently the birds do too, because they were singing like crazy. Can you imagine how pretty it'll look once all the leaves are in?

This morning I was making dressing for a quinoa salad. I squeezed a lime and it basically exploded all over my shirt. I wasn't impressed, but it dried and didn't show. Win! Tonight, I was tossing potatoes in oil and spices and part of the mixture flew out of the bowl onto the same shirt - apparently I was stirring too vigorously. This, my friends, is why I almost always wear black.

I learned a practical and valuable life lesson today and I thought it would be helpful to share. Leaf blowers are quite powerful. In fact, they can be so powerful that in addition to leaves, they may also blow dog poop. Who knew?? Therefore, it's very very important to make sure no one is standing directly in your path while you're operating one.... You're welcome.

It’s November, which means Birthday month in our home, but it also means Business Planning in our business. 2021 is going to be here before we know it! I’ve always struggled with the idea of Business Planning, but probably not for the reason you’d think. It’s not that I don’t like planning, because I do. There’s nothing I like more than a good plan! Don’t even get me started on lists I LOVE lists!!... It’s not that I’m unorganized, because I’m not. You have to be organized when you’re running a business. What I struggle with is the concept that some real estate business planning tools use. They want you to project how many ends you’re going to do in the year, or how many transactions you’re going to have. That feels really icky to me. This business isn’t about transactions or ends. It’s not about numbers. At least not for me and Jeff. It’s about relationships and human beings. It’s about helping people achieve goals. It’s about helping people through what might be an incredibly painful situation in their lives. It’s about helping people simplify and improve their lives. It’s about helping people embark on new chapters. The day I start to think of all of the incredible people I’ve met and worked with as ends or transactions is the day for me to pack it in. No one should EVER be a number.

Most people don’t know this, but I went to school to be a Gemmologist. I worked in a jewellery store in my late teens and early twenties. I fell head over heels in love with gemstones. I went to George Brown College. I became a certified Gemmologist and a Fellow of the Canadian Gemmological Association. ... My first job out of college was with a diamond wholesaler. I was grading hundreds of carats of diamonds at the office. I spent my time travelling across Southern Ontario appraising jewellery. I hated it! Appraising jewellery is a lonely business. Diamonds and gemstones don’t have personalities, emotions or a sense of humour. They’re not people. I need to have people!

It's Sunday. The day when you hope to have the extra time to devote to a really special meal. It's the best, right? Until it turns into a bit of a failure.... You plan for a delicious, tender beef stew served over garlic mashed potatoes. You've had it planned out for a few days and it's going to be epic! While the stew cooks in the crockpot, you decide to go ALL OUT and make homemade bread from scratch. That's right - from scratch! The entire house smells incredible. The "Mom and Wife of the Year" award is a certainty! But things don't always go according to plan. The beef seems to be tough. The stew is too liquidy and despite your best efforts it's just not thickening up. The bread doesn't completely rise. Ok - it doesn’t rise at all and is basically a pathetic little rectangular yeast puck. Maybe you quietly slip into the powder room to cry a little bit because.....well....you're a perfectionist and things not going according to plan this evening really throw you for a loop for some reason. Why did this particular dinner become the "be all and end all"?? I have no idea. While you're in there giving yourself a bit of a pep talk and fixing your mascara, your husband quietly steps in, giving you the extra hand you didn't want to admit you needed. He turns the crappy yeast puck into yummy garlic toast and thickens up the stew. He also fills up your glass of wine because he's awesome like that! Dinner is a success once again and it's freaking delicious! What did I learn from this?? So many things! #1 - Team work makes the dream work. #2 - When you're resisting help, that's likely when you need it the most. #3 - Asking for and accepting help DOES NOT make you weak. (See point # 1) #4 - Sometimes we put a ridiculous amount of pressure on ourselves and set standards of perfection that are unrealistic. We need to be kind to ourselves. Perfection is BS. Today is a good day and I'm grateful for helping hands that I'm sometimes too proud (and stubborn) to ask for xo
